Mike Tirico playfully mocked his Sunday Night Football teammate Cris Collinsworth for his Patrick Mahomes adoration.
On Sunday night in Week 7, the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks hosted the Kansas City Chiefs in a showdown that should excite NFL fans. However, Tirico wasted no time in addressing the Mahomes-sized elephant in the room.
For years, fans have joked that Collinsworth finds a way to laud Mahomes in breathless awe no matter what happens on the field, whether it is an incredible throw or a routine, neutral, or even negative play. The joke expanded to the point where fans suggest that Collinsworth brings up Mahomes during games or situations where the Chiefs quarterback is not even playing or involved.
Given that Mahomes was in action on Sunday night with Collinsworth in the NBC booth, Tirico said, “The Chiefs also still have Patrick Mahomes.”
“Is that right?” replied Collinsworth, seemingly understanding where his play-by-play caller was going. Tirico then quipped: “I know you like to mention him.”
The joke has gone mainstream, with comedian Nikki Glaser making light of Collinsworth’s remarkable obsession with the Chiefs' superstar. During an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show last month, Collinsworth admitted he nearly told Mahomes he was going to rag on him on one broadcast, just to shift the narrative.
“I almost told Patrick when we had our meeting, ‘Hey, man, one of these games I'm just going to rip you for no apparent reason. Would you be good with that?’” Collinsworth said. “Knowing Patrick, he'd be like, ‘Yeah, it's fine, don't worry about it.’”
Entering the Sunday Night Football clash with the Seahawks, Mahomes has led the Chiefs to a perfect 5-0 record. He has put up 1,309 passing yards and nine touchdowns while also tossing three interceptions.
After defeating the Los Angeles Chargers to go to 5-0, Mahomes, who has been reunited with a familiar deep threat this month, achieved his 100th career regular-season win, and in doing so, tied Tom Brady for the fewest starts in NFL history (131) to reach that milestone.
“It's awesome 'cause he's the GOAT, man,” Mahomes told CBS sideline reporter Melanie Collins when asked what it means to be in the same conversation as someone like the seven-time Super Bowl champion.
“He's the one that's shown us how to do it, winning the Super Bowls and winning every single week, so it's always an honor to be mentioned in his name, but it seems like every time I win a game, I'm tying him, so I'm gonna have to keep winning.”
The Seahawks hold a 10-0 lead over the Chiefs at halftime.
