The cyclocross season is well under way and on this Tuesday evening, one of the winter's two night crosses has taken place: The Nacht van Woerden. Joris Nieuwenhuis and Marie Schreiber have been crowned victors on well built out fields.

Over at the women's race it was Marie Schreiber who took the victory. The Team SD Worx - ProTime rider has already won on several occasions this season, including this weekend's Berencross in Belgium.

In Woerden she was the strongest, surprisingly, against a very strong field. Inge van der Heijden rode to second place on the muddy circuit; whilst Lucinda Brand only managed to secure a position in the final podium.

The men's race saw Joris Nieuwenhuis take his first victory of the season, in his first appearance. The Dutch rider has made his debut for Heizomat - Cube, and has succeeded in taking the victory over Niels Vandeputte and defending champion Felipe Orts.

Jente Michels and Yordi Corsus completed the Top5 in a race where the likes of Pim Ronhaar and Laurens Sweeck were unable to be a factor in, and finished outside the Top10 in rainy conditions.

Joris Nieuwenhuis starts off 2026-2027 on the right foot

"I’d been sick for a week, and when that happens, you’re never quite sure where you stand," Nieuwenhuis told Wielerflits in a post-race interview. "In the weeks leading up to that, I’d been feeling fantastic and was really motivated to get started, but the illness held me back. I’m just glad that things felt right from the very start here."

The Superprestige Cup begins this weekend in Overijse, kicking off the action in the season's main competition. The 30-year old will be going into them with confidence.

"Any doubts I had are definitely gone now. Did I have doubts? Before Woerden, yes, but not about the period ahead. I wasn’t terribly ill, just a bit of a cold, not feeling 100%. Now, everything feels good. I watched the other cyclocross races with mixed feelings, but I know things could always be worse. And, after all, I still have an entire season ahead of me."
