Michael Carrick could face sack shouts should Daniel Farke defeat him for a sixth time

Daniel Farke has berated the criticism aimed at Michael Carrick after Manchester United’s start to the season, arguing more support should be given to young English coaches.

Carrick - who has lost to Farke in five of their six meetings - is facing scrutiny with the Red Devils winning just one of their first six Premier League fixtures and are winless in four matches.

The manager and club directors collared defender Lisandro Martinez for a meeting after he lashed out at his board for a lack of summer investment following the midweek Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Carrick insists the matter has been put to bed but given recent form, many are backing Leeds to clinch their first home win against their arch rivals for 24 years. Farke himself has shirked the idea that his team are favourites.

He also railed against the criticism of Carrick, opining that he did a "tremendous" job at Old Trafford last season by securing Champions League football having arrived mid-season.

“With all the developments on social media, not complaining about it, but just the fact everyone comes and out with negativity,” Farke began. “I don't understand it.

“Because when I think about Michael, we don't have too many young British coaches in the Premier League, and right now we have someone who is a really young, promising manager.

“For me, he did an excellent job at Middlesbrough, and he came in [at Man United] last season. He helped a lot to stabilize the club, to steady the ship. He has done an amazing job.

“And right now, after six game days, when they didn't have a horrendous start - of course, by their perception that they want to fight for the title - but somewhere in mid-table, anyhow, the criticism starts already. I don't like it.

“I don't see why there's so much negativity and why it seems like the outside world wants to see everyone fail. I think we should back him and should be happy that we have someone with so much potential, and don't question them too early.”

While another loss for Carrick could risk him falling to the same fate Ruben Amorim - who was sacked after playing Leeds at Elland Road last year amid his own outburst against the board - Farke says he would actually prefer to face a side in better form.

He explained: “I'm always a bit more respectful when a club comes after a loss or after a difficult spell because I know myself, we [Leeds] are then also more on it to show a reaction and to win the momentum back. I can't say that I'm particularly when a club comes and hasn't won for a few games.

"We also speak about this topic because I want my players also to be aware of where the mindset of the opponent is and the wider context is. I think each bit of information, if it's technically or the soft skills, is important in the preparation.”
