Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana is set to miss the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies after being diagnosed with a labrum tear. The injury casts doubt over his availability for the two-Test tour of South Africa too in November.
A BCB official confirmed the development to Cricbuzz after Rana was recently assessed in Australia for his discomfort. Prior to that, it was believed that the pacer was suffering from weakness in the back and pelvic area, but the BCB decided to send him overseas for a second opinion.
Rana was not named in Bangladesh's 15-man squad for the first Test in Mirpur, which was announced on Friday, and is now set to miss the series altogether.
“Yes, a labrum tear has been detected,” the aforementioned BCB official said. “He has already been given an injection in Australia and he has started his rehabilitation program. He is likely to bowl on Friday (October 30).
The official, working closely with the development, was not confident of Rana’s recovery in time for the first Test in South Africa, while his availability for the second Test would depend on how quickly he recovers.
“If he fails to recover in time before the second Test (against South Africa) in that case he is likely to make a comeback to competitive cricket with the white-ball series against South Africa,” the official said.
It marks another setback for the pacer, who had been working towards a comeback after being sidelined by a grade-two side strain sustained during Bangladesh's tour of Zimbabwe in July. The injury had forced him to miss the tour of Australia, the Asian Games and the one-off Test against Afghanistan. He then suffered a fresh injury to his glute during his rehabilitation, ruling him out of the tri-series in the UAE involving Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.
After Bangladesh host West Indies for two Tests starting October 28, they are set to tour South Africa for two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is with the tour scheduled to commence on November 15.
