Man City signed me as a publicity stunt - there was no respect so I left

George Weah once claimed that Manchester City signed him as part of a publicity stunt that earned him "no decency and no respect."

Two of Weah's former clubs clash on Wednesday night as City host current holders Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. It is likely that the Ballon d'Or winner will be supporting the away side given the manner in which he departed Manchester.

During his early career, Weah enjoyed plenty of success with PSG, Monaco and AC Milan. He won seven major honours, including two Serie A titles and the French league.

Weah joined City in August 2000 after a successful arrival to the Premier League with Chelsea, winning the FA Cup. He arrived at the newly-promoted side with high hopes of becoming a regular starter under Joe Royle but faced a different situation altogether.

In total, he played nine times for City and made six goal contributions. Weah cut his two-year deal short after around two months and claimed he was being used for publicity and nothing more.

The former Serie A winner explained at the time: "It was not a matter of not playing. I left because of the way I was treated. There was a lack of communication, no decency and no respect. I know people may think it is about money, but I was born poor and cash has nothing to do with it. But I will not allow anyone to insult my integrity.

"I was made to feel old and of no use to the club. I felt I was being used for publicity, to attract other players and to show the public that big players would come here. I am not a trouble maker and I don't need to play every game - I just want to be respected. I just want to be treated like an ordinary player.

"Coming to Manchester City was a great challenge for me, but now I feel like the worst player that ever existed."

Following his tough time at City, Weah returned to France to play for Marseille but he never won another major team honour in football. He finished his career in the UAE Football League with Al Jazira, retiring at the age of 37.

Since then, the former striker moved into politics and became the president of his home country, Liberia, in 2018. He resided as a leader for six years, before being replaced by Joseph Boakai in 2024.
