Elena Rybakina and Alexander Zverev confirm Brisbane international as 2027 season start

Elena Rybakina and Alexander Zverev have both electrified the tennis world with two Grand Slam triumphs this season, and now the reigning World No. 1 and the soon-to-be ATP leader have set their sights firmly on the 2027 campaign. Both champions have confirmed that the Brisbane International will mark the kickoff of their next season, signaling a historic convergence of tennis royalty at the Australian event.

Cameron Pearson, Brisbane International’s tournament director, captured the moment’s significance: “To have both the men’s and women’s world No.1s competing at the Brisbane International for the first time is a historic moment for the tournament and incredibly exciting for our fans.” This announcement reshapes the landscape for early-season preparation, especially as top players traditionally bypass warm-up tournaments ahead of the Australian Open.

Zverev’s choice to start in Brisbane is particularly notable given his past avoidance of individual events before Melbourne. The German star has frequently opted for team competitions like the United Cup and ATP Cup, with his last singles appearance at Brisbane dating back to the 2020 ATP Cup, where he suffered defeats to Denis Shapovalov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alex de Minaur. His lone Brisbane International main draw appearance was in 2015 when he exited in the first round of qualifying. The 2027 campaign, however, promises a fresh chapter for Zverev at the Pat Rafter Arena.

Meanwhile, Elena Rybakina brings glowing memories to Brisbane, having claimed the 2024 title with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory over Aryna Sabalenka. Sabalenka herself has been a force in Brisbane, winning the tournament twice in recent years. Rybakina’s return sets the stage for a tantalizing showdown between the world’s top two women before they head to Melbourne, where they have contested two Grand Slam finals already.

Rybakina expressed her enthusiasm ahead of the event: “I’m really looking forward to starting my season in Brisbane. Winning the title in 2024 was special, and it’s a tournament I love playing,” as reported by First Serve.

Brisbane’s reputation for hosting tennis greats is well-established, with Novak Djokovic launching his 2025 season there, even partnering with Nick Kyrgios in doubles, and Rafael Nadal making his final professional appearances at the event in 2024 after nearly a year out.

While the 2027 season start is confirmed for both stars, their 2026 campaigns are far from over. Rybakina currently leads the WTA rankings with 9,696 points, holding a substantial margin over Sabalenka’s 7,550 points. Despite a recent upset loss to Ann Li at the Wuhan Open, Sabalenka’s chances of overtaking Rybakina by year’s end are slim unless she competes in a WTA 500 event before Indian Wells, a scenario deemed unlikely. Rybakina, sidelined recently due to injury, aims to recover swiftly to conclude the season strongly at the WTA Finals.

On the ATP side, Zverev’s elevation to the No. 1 ranking is virtually guaranteed as Jannik Sinner has ended his season prematurely and Carlos Alcaraz exited early in Shanghai. Currently competing at the Shanghai Masters, Zverev is set to face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the semifinal, eyeing his third title of the year. His season still includes key indoor tournaments in Vienna, Bercy, and Turin, where he is determined to reinforce his status with solid finishes.

Brisbane’s 2027 event will undoubtedly be a landmark occasion, featuring the sport’s dominant figures both eager to launch their seasons with momentum. As Rybakina and Zverev prepare to light up the opening chapter of their campaigns, the tennis world watches with anticipation for thrilling clashes and the continuation of their remarkable trajectories.
