Former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch has joked that fans of the Whites have too much time on their hands after he was included on a list of the top 50 most hated people in history alongside Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein.

The Canada boss endured a difficult spell at Elland Road after succeeding Marcelo Bielsa in the dugout. The American signed a three-year deal and helped the Whites avoid relegation on the final day of the Premier League season in 2022, to finish 17th.

Things did not improve under Marsch in 2022/23 and he could only guide the team to winning 15 points from 20 games before he was sacked after a year in charge. Nevertheless, he seems to have retained some good humour about how he is regarded by Leeds supporters.

Marsch responded to a post on X by a Leeds fan who had altered an image of the 'Top 50 Most Hated People in History'. They slotted Marsch in at 35, between serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and historical figure Vlad the Impaler, remembered for his brutal actions to spread fear.

"Check out number 35. I’d say Leeds fans have a little too much time on their hands!" Marsch posted.

Marsch finds himself more well-liked as Canada's boss after guiding the home nation to the last 16 before falling short against Morocco. The 52-year-old returned to British shores with the North American side to face Wales in 2025, and revealed he had some fond memories as he lined up against Daniel james.

"Brings back some good memories," Marsch said. "I'm happy for Leeds to be back in the Premier League. I'm rooting for them.

"There's not as many players [I know] last year or the year before, but it's a club I respect and it was an honour be the coach there. I follow and root them on all the time, which the fans may or may not want to hear."

He does believe he suffered from prejudice during his time in the Premier League, however. "Ted Lasso probably doesn't help," Marsch said speaking to Give Me Sport.

"I talked about Ted Lasso right away to kind of get it out of the way. It was funny because Ted Lasso was also out when I was in Germany [with Leipzig], but nobody called me Ted Lasso. I spoke German and nobody talked about my accent there. Nobody even talked about me being American.

"I think there was a prejudice against me, but I didn't let it deter me. It almost motivated me even more. That's kind of how I am. I deal better with criticism than I do with praise. There were some things happening on the inside [at Leeds]. I'm not going to go into it, but there were definitely things that I experienced that I couldn't believe."
