Tottenham player ratings vs Chelsea: Two 9/10s key as forgotten man takes chance
(PA)

Tottenham secured their first win at Stamford Bridge since 2018 as Mike Penders’ own goal saw them beat 10-man Chelsea 1-0 in a fiery contest in west London.

Chelsea and Tottenham is always a game played on the edge and this affair was not short of drama as Spurs held their nerve to secure back to back Premier League wins after Penders inexplicably punched the ball into his own net in the 77th minute before Cole Palmer was given a second yellow card for a stamp on Conor Gallagher.

Mathys Tel wrapped up the three points on an historic night for Spurs as he rolled the ball past Penders on the edge of the box.

Antonin Kinsky 5

Some really shaky moments with the ball at his feet, but made up for it with a string of excellent saves to deny Palmer and Henderson.

Archie Gray 7

Kept Premier League debutant Geovany Quenda very quiet. A disciplined performance from Gray, who was once again asked to fill in at right-back after a rare start in midfield against Coventry.

Alert to everything that Chelsea chucked at him. Throw his body in front of shots and kept pace with their runners when they tried to break in behind. Won eight of his nine aerial duels.

A confident display from the Spurs captain as Chelsea were kept at arm’s length for most of the game. Kept his cool as the game exploded into life with a flurry of hefty challenges. Did not commit a single foul on a night when both sides traded 26 fouls between them.

Andy Robertson 7

An experienced performance from Robertson, equally comfortable skipping past challenges as he was breaking into the Chelsea box. Set up Spurs’ best chance of the first-half with a cross for Marmoush. Replaced after 65 mins by Porro.

Sandro Tonali 8

Really starting to grow into his role and the responsibility of being Spurs’ club-record signing. Physical, tidy in possession and played with authority. Spurs dominated the midfield battle due to Tonali’s

Mateus Fernandes 8

Gave Spurs rhythm in the middle of the park. Combined neat first-time passes with some cultured switches of play. This was a big opportunity for him and he lived up to his £85million price tag, even if he had to be bailed out by Kinsky after being muscled off the ball by the corner flag.

Mohammed Kudus 6

Bent a shot narrowly wide in the first-half but did not offer an awful lot as Spurs funnelled most of their play down the left-flank.

James Maddison 8

Pulled the strings for Spurs. He was constantly in space and used his quick feet and awareness to play his way through Chelsea’s midfield. Huge concern when he had to be withdrawn early in the second-half after going down off the ball.

Omar Marmoush 5

Spurned a wonderful opportunity when he fired straight at Penders from just outside the six-yard box. Struggled with Colwill’s physicality early on but found more luck when he dropped off and started spinning into space.

Mathys Tel 8

Sealed a historic victory with a cultured finish from outside the box. With Neto caught upfield, he was able to regularly take on Acheampong one-on-one and found plenty of joy. Dug out some dangerous crosses in the first half and got his reward when he shrugged off Acheampong and rolled the ball past Penders late on.

Substitutes

Conor Gallagher 6

Booed as he came on. Picked up a booking for hauling back Rogers but was the victim of the stamp from Palmer that turned the game completely in Tottenham’s favour. The boyhood Chelsea fan will go down in Spurs folklore.

Pedro Porro 6

Only fit enough for the bench. His absence was not as sorely felt as some would have expected.

Dominic Solanke 5

Did not impact the game as much as he would have hoped, but it did not matter in the end as Spurs soon took the lead.

Dejan Kulusevski N/A

On a night where everything went well for Spurs, Kulusevski’s appearance was the cherry on top as he works his way back to full fitness.

Ben Davies N/A

Came on to shore things up as Spurs coasted home to a comfortable victory.

Unused subs: Dubravka, Senesi, Davies, Olusesi, Kulusevski, Williams-Barnett
