Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Matchday 7, 18/10/2026
A week after their narrow victory away at ESTAC Troyes (0-2), Olympique de Marseille put in a far more convincing performance on Sunday to secure a 2-5 win away at Angers. Bruno Genesio’s side have provisionally climbed to ninth place in the table.
The afternoon had, however, got off to a bad start for Les Phocéens, punished early on after a display of technical brilliance from Amine Sbaï and a misplaced clearance from Geoffrey Kondogbia to Lilian Raolisoa, who scored with a lucky deflection (1-0, 14th minute). More enterprising than their opponents, Angers, keen to extend their lead, tried everything… but were thwarted by crucial saves from CJ Egan-Riley, followed by Timothy Weah.
Decisive in defence, the OM captain distinguished himself a few minutes later in attack, delivering a perfect cross for Himad Abdelli’s header (1-1, 37th), who didn’t hesitate to equalise against his former club. Having drawn level, Amine Gouiri’s team-mates had no intention of stopping there. Just before half-time, it was Nouhoum Kassimoko’s turn (1-2, 43rd) to find the back of the net, scoring his first goal in Ligue 1.
Leading at half-time, Marseille maintained their momentum after the break. Gouiri, who had been fairly quiet up to that point, sealed the deal, converting in two attempts a penalty he had won himself (1-3, 60th). Trailing but not down and out, Angers fought their way back into the match, thanks in part to a penalty, this time converted by Amine El Ouazzani (2-3, 75′). But Marseille used this reduction in the deficit to step up a gear, with Amine Harit (2-4, 83th) and then Igor Paixão (2-5, 87th) both getting on the scoresheet in turn.
Jeffrey de Lange – 5
Timothy Weah – 7
To blame on Angers’ opening goal, the American full-back more than made up for it, first preventing Angers’ second effort, before delivering a fine assist. A constant threat down the right flank, he capped off his performance with a second assist, this time setting up Igor Paixão for his first goal of the season.
Geoffrey Kondogbia – 5
CJ Egan-Riley – 6
Emerson Palmieri – 6
Nouhoum Kamissoko – 6
Tochukwu Nnadi – 7
While he was at fault for Angers’ second goal, Nnadi put in a well-rounded performance at the Stade Raymond-Kopa. He was a constant presence in midfield, winning back possession, and also stood out for his runs forward and his passing ability, particularly for OM’s fourth and fifth goals.
Himad Abdelli – 8
He may well be the player who has benefited most from Bruno Genesio’s tactical adjustments. Playing in a more advanced role on the pitch, Abdelli showcased his technical ability and precision in orchestrating his team’s attacks. With the second-highest pass completion rate (96 per cent), he also created the most chances (4).
