Paul Finebaum Urges Texas to Bench Arch Manning After Latest Loss
Caleb Williams Lands On Cover Of Madden NFL 27

Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning is facing growing scrutiny after another difficult result.

The debate over his place in the starting lineup is intensifying. One prominent college football voice has now called for a change, raising fresh questions about how coach Steve Sarkisian should handle the situation.

Speaking on ESPN's "First Take," Paul Finebaum argued that Texas should consider benching Manning. The comments came as the Longhorns prepare for a major matchup against Ole Miss.

When asked whether it was time to bench Manning, Finebaum answered directly.

"Yes, it is time. It's a painful thing to say, and we all know the backstory, but what's the point of continuing this agony? Go ahead and try somebody else. If you're going to give KJ the reps some practice, let him start the game."

Finebaum acknowledged the difficulty of making a quarterback change before such an important game. However, he believes giving another option a chance could help Texas find answers.

"I realize it's Ole Miss. I realize it's one of the biggest games in the country, and give him a series or two. Are you wasting it? Maybe. But maybe Arch Manning will pick something up on the sideline."

Finebaum also questioned Sarkisian's handling of the quarterback, arguing that the coach had made Manning's situation more difficult.

"I still think he can be an elite quarterback, but I also believe that Steve Sarkisian has completely screwed it up," Finebaum said. "First of all, Sarkisian shouldn't be the offensive coordinator calling the plays. He's also the head coach. I think he has put too much into Arch Manning's head."

He concluded, "I'm going to let him talk about it, but I'm just giving you the view from the upper deck. It's time to make a change."

The criticism follows Texas' 27-24 loss to Florida on Oct. 17, its second consecutive defeat. Manning and the Longhorns have struggled to meet expectations after entering the season with championship ambitions.

But benching Manning may not solve every problem. Quarterback development takes time, and Texas' offensive struggles cannot be attributed to one player alone. Giving backup KJ Lacey a chance could provide a spark, but it would also place an inexperienced quarterback in a demanding situation.
