The striker struck deep into stoppage time to earn Latics a share of the spoils after a battling display in difficult conditions at The Hive.
It was Fondop's second of the season, and first in nine league games, but he insisted the result was more important than his personal contribution.
"I'm happy to have scored but more importantly we didn't lose," he said.
"Away it's always important to get something. We didn't get the three points but at least we got one point."
With strong winds and heavy rain making life difficult for both teams, Fondop felt Oldham's fighting spirit was key to securing a result.
"Conditions were absolutely horrible but the boys kept going," he said.
"We knew we had to graft.
"It wasn't one of those games where things work out for you and you pass the ball nice, it was all about grit and going for it, not giving up, just going to the end."
Oldham found themselves under pressure in the first half and were behind at the break, but Fondop praised the response shown by his team-mates in an improved second half.
"We were under a lot of pressure in the first 15-20 minutes. We defended well but then we gave a goal away," he said.
"But the boys showed strength, belief, faith and togetherness to get back and to get the point."
Fondop could have scored earlier in the contest, most notably when he was denied in a one-on-one chance, but never lost faith that another opportunity would come.
"I had a few chances, like the one v one. Maybe I should have scored but you can also say it's a good save from the keeper. But at the same time I didn't just give up after that," he added.
"That's part of football, it's more mental. You can have two, three, four chances that you don't convert but you just have to make sure you keep going and I kept the belief to the end that eventually something was going to happen."
