It looked as if an unfortunate trend would continue for the Steelers on Sunday. And then, the improbably occurred.
As the Steelers entered Week 6 of the NFL season, they had yet to win consecutive games on the season. A Week 1 victory was followed by a loss, and then a Week 3 victory was also followed by a loss. So when the Steelers won last week, and were trailing by 13 points at the start of their showdown with the Buccaneers on Sunday, it seemed as if an unfortunate trend would continue for Pittsburgh.
But the Steelers were far from quitting, and a lot can happen in 15 minutes – even enough to score 16 points and force an overtime match-up. And that's exactly what happened, as Pittsburgh managed a rally led by a pair of veteran presences that would end up leading to a 26-19 victory in overtime to grace head coach Mike McCarthy with his first back-to-back wins since taking over as the franchise's head coach.
The comeback began early in the fourth quarter, with the Steelers trailing 16-3. Aaron Rodgers moved the ball downfield and connected on a 5-yard touchdown pass to bring the Steelers within one score, with a Chris Boswell PAT narrowing Tampa Bay's lead to six points.
Boswell would end up being the star for the rest of the fourth quarter. Rodgers did enough to get the team into field goal position on three straight drives to close out regulation, and Boswell would subsequently boot a 39-yard field goal, a 58-yard field goal, and a 20-yard field goal to put the Steelers ahead by three points with just over a minute left to play.
Unfortunately for the Steelers, the Buccaneers would drive down the field to tie up the game and force overtime. But fortunately for the Steelers, they had Rodgers at quarterback, as he engineered another touchdown drive in overtime, capped off by a 6-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing drive, the Steelers defense would bring the game to a close.
Boswell set the franchise record for most field goals on Sunday after converting four total in the win, while Rodgers would finish the day 33-for-49 with 253 yards and two touchdowns.
