Chris Sutton was impressed with Haissem Hassan’s attacking display against Hearts, but the former Celtic striker had a complaint about the winger’s performance.
Hassan caused problems throughout Celtic’s 7-1 victory over Hearts, hitting the post in the first half and regularly getting the better of defenders.
The Egyptian’s willingness to take players on earned praise from Sutton, although the Sky Sports pundit wasn’t convinced by his contribution when Celtic lost possession.
Since Hearts were a title rival last season, that's got to make it one of the best
Speaking on Sky Sports, Sutton said: “Hassan has a box of tricks. He is so difficult to play against, he’s so positive and can go both ways.
“He doesn’t want to work back defensively and that’s the issue with him.”
Sutton’s final sentence was a harsh assessment of the winger. He wasn’t questioning Hassan’s ability to defend but his willingness to do the work. That’s a concern for Celtic, particularly with young Colby Donovan playing behind him at right-back.
Donovan cannot be expected to handle two opponents every time Hassan stays forward and Celtic lose the ball.
Hearts struggled to contain Hassan on Sunday, but Thursday’s Europa League clash with Celta Vigo could be a tougher examination of his game.
Celtic won’t necessarily enjoy the same attacking freedom, and Donovan could find himself under considerably more pressure.
Hassan deserves credit for his performance against Hearts. His direct running gave the visitors a torrid afternoon, and Celtic supporters will want to see more of it.
However, O’Neill also has to consider what happens when his side are forced to defend.
Hassan has made a strong case for keeping his place against Celta Vigo, but Sutton has highlighted something the winger needs to address if he’s going to become a regular starter.
