Mikel Arteta must answer six Arsenal injury questions ahead of Liverpool Premier League clash

Arsenal's loss at Fleetwood Town was an evening to forget for Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff, with attention now turning towards the weekend's Premier League clash at Liverpool.

The Gunners were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by the League Two side on Tuesday as Fleetwood triumphed 5-3 on penalties in one of the greatest upsets in the competition’s history. Max Dowman was sent off with five minutes left to play as Arteta's decision to make nine changes to his starting line-up backfired miserably.

"First of all, congratulations to Fleetwood because they are through," Arteta said after the match. "In the manner that they've done it, the atmosphere they've created, I have nothing to fault the players for in terms of their attitude, application, the intensity that they put in throughout the game.

"After the goal that we conceded, they did it throughout the game, they did it with 11 players, with 10, so there is nothing there. But, when you are that superior, you give nothing to the opponent apart from the first action that we defended so poorly and we conceded the goal.

"And you generate so many situations, actions, volume of shots and chances in the opposition box. You have to score three, four or five and then you capitalise on that and you see the difference in the game. If you don't, then there are no margins and that's the reality. And then you have to wait and get through the round on penalties and we didn't do that. So, the probability is always there. It was really low, the way the game was panning out, but it's football and even with that really low probability, you can be out of the cup and we are."

Arsenal headed straight back to London following their brutal cup upset. The team departed on a flight out of Blackpool Airport around 12:15am on Wednesday and are believed to have landed at Luton Airport just before 1am.

Players are expected back in training on Thursday and attention will now turn to the trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday. Andoni Iraola's side are currently fourth in the Premier League and have won their last four games in all competitions.

Arteta, though, has some injury concerns going into the clash. Riccardo Calafiori, Declan Rice and Noni Madueke were all left out of the squad to face Fleetwood and it's unclear if the trio will be fit to make the trip to Merseyside.

"Calafiori was out, Noni was out with an ankle and Declan was finished with a problem the other day [against Everton]," Arteta said. "That's why I had to substitute him."

Calafiori was a second half substitute in the 2-0 win over Everton last Saturday but finished the game with a "slight issue". Speaking after the victory over the Toffees, Arteta said: "It was because he had a slight issue, we don't know what it is, it seems to be something very small, but he was cautious about it.”

Rice was spotted holding his hamstring before he was taken off, while Madueke completed the whole match and details of his injury are unknown. Elsewhere, William Saliba is not expected back until late November at the earliest due to a back injury and Bukayo Saka is recovering from a thigh injury which is expected to rule him out until December.

Christos Tzolis suffered a hamstring injury while away with Greece but the winger is edging closer to a return. football.london reported before the match against Everton that there is a realistic chance he makes the trip to Liverpool.

Dowman will not be available for selection, meanwhile, after he was sent off against Fleetwood for kicking out at Harrison Neal. The 16-year-old will miss the Gunners' games against Liverpool, Hull and Newcastle as he serves a three-match suspension.

Arteta is expected to address the media at his pre-match press conference on Friday and all eyes will be on the Spaniard as he provides the latest injury updates on Calafiori, Rice, Madueke, Tzolis, Saka and Saliba.
