Manchester United travel to Chelsea today looking to snap their winless run that stretches back to August.

Manager Michael Carrick was thought to be on the brink of the sack after overseeing eight straight matches without a victory, but he has been retained in his post for this trip to Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils were thrashed by Bournemouth last weekend to follow up their 4-1 humbling in the Champions League by Cesc Fabregas’ Como, which saw Bruno Fernandes hit out at his head coach’s tactical approach.

Those comments from the Portuguese international saw him benched for the encounter with Bournemouth, and the captain was an unused substitute at Old Trafford.

Since then, the No8 has held clear-the-air talks with his manager over the issue, and Carrick confirmed on Thursday that Fernandes would return to the fold for the visit to the capital.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are coming off the back of an agonising penalty shootout defeat by Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, as Wesley Fofana skied the decisive spot-kick at Anfield.

Xabi Alonso’s men are reeling from a shock 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham last time out, where Cole Palmer was sent off.

He is likely to be back in action here, having served his one-game suspension in midweek.
