You might normally expect a Top 11 team to be favored against an unranked team, even if that game is at the unranked team’s home stadium. But that’s not the case on Wednesday evening for the game between Tennessee and South Carolina this weekend in Columbia.
The Vols originally opened as a 2.5-point favorite against the Gamecocks this weekend in Williams-Brice Stadium. But early in the week, the line dramatically moved in South Carolina’s favor. As of Wednesday evening, the Gamecocks now sit as the 2.5-point favorite for this weekend’s SEC matchup.
With the line seemingly settling in South Carolina’s favor, it seems like oddsmakers are trending toward the Gamecocks this Saturday. There’s still plenty of time for the line to move, but the silence over the last few days indicates that books are content with South Carolina -2.5 through the middle of the week.
There are a few different reasons why Tennessee, the No. 11-ranked team in the nation, is an underdog at a .500 South Carolina team this weekend. The first and biggest reason is that this is a trap game for the Volunteers.
Tennessee is coming off its biggest and most emotional win of the season last weekend against Alabama. The Vols got back on the right side of the Third Saturday in October series, and the celebration was worthy of the rivalry. Tennessee is now tasked with putting that win in the rearview mirror to prepare for a game in enemy territory, which is a place that was a trap for the Vols during the 2022 season.
This week will be a big test for the Vols to see whether the team can sustain momentum off the Alabama win or if Tennessee falls short on the road.
The other reason is the nature of the 2026 college football season, though, where it’s already been proven that any ranked team can fall on any given weekend. We’re looking at a league right now where the No. 1 team has lost to unranked foes in back-to-back weeks, with Texas losing to Oklahoma and Georgia losing to Auburn. Ranked teams are ranked teams, of course, but that doesn’t make them invincible. Just last week, we saw five of the top seven teams in the nation lose.
There’s also the South Carolina element, too. The Gamecocks are 3-3 on the season but started SEC play with a 0-3 record after losses to Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Florida. With conversation stirring about a lost year for the program, though, South Carolina went into Gainesville and knocked off No. 16 Florida for its first SEC win and first ranked win of the season. That game, in many ways, was the perfect encapsulation of this topsy-turvy college football season where no one is safe on any given weekend.
Additionally, South Carolina was on a bye week this week to have two full weeks to prepare for the Vols.
Add in all of these ingredients – Tennessee coming off an emotional win, South Carolina’s win over Florida and rest, and the nature of the college football season – and it’s really not all that surprising to see why the oddsmakers sided with South Carolina early in the week.
We’ll continue to monitor the line as the weekend draws near.
