CARENCRO – It’s no secret the Carencro Bears’ football team has endured a lot this season.
But as Bears head coach Gavin Peters has told his team since Day 1 “adversity creates an opportunity to be special.”
Thursday, Peters, and the Bears were quite special as they routed the Beau Chene Gators 57-15 to clinch at least a share of the District 5-4A championship.
“We got off to a rough start this season. But after the Westgate game, I told the kids everyone is 0-0 and that we start a new season with district play,” Peters said. “The message this week was to capitalize on and seize the opportunity that we have to cement the legacy of this team in the history of Carencro football.”
Although they will have the chance to win the district title outright next week when they travel to face the Cecilia Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Thursday, securing a share gives the Bears its first district championship since 2019.
In what was one of their best performances of the season, the Bears wasted little time seizing control of the game as they jumped out to a commanding 36-0 lead in the first half.
“We wanted to run the football in between the tackles and kind of punch them in the mouth and get it over with before it even started,” Peters said. “I think we did that probably as best as we could. I really believe offensively that was one of our most complete games that we've had this year.”
Leading the offensive onslaught were quarterback Carson Gurzi and running back Da’Marion Green.
“We wanted to come out and establish the line of scrimmage and run the football,” Peters said.
Green, who has played on both sides of the football for the Bears, had been “banged up a little bit,” but is back healthy.
And Green made his presence felt early and often, rushing for 168 yards and a touchdown on four carries before halftime.
“We wanted to get the ball to Da’Marion early,” Peters said. “So happy that we were able to kind of get him back in the fold. We had a lot of guys that had great performances (Thursday), but I think Da’Marion was definitely one of the stars of the night.”
With Green, who only had one carry for five yards in a second half that was shortened due to running time after the Bears took a 50-7 advantage in the third quarter, handling the rushing attack, Gurzi did the rest in the passing game.
Gurzi, who also had a rushing touchdown, completed 18-of-24 passes for 299 yards and four touchdowns.
“One of the hardest things to do in life for a man - or for any person - is to be consistent,” Peters said. “I tell you what, Carson Gurzi is the model of consistency. I couldn’t be happier for that kid. He deserves every positive thing that comes his way.”
Among Gurzi’s favorite targets on the night were Dentrell Morrison, who caught three passes for 97 yards and a touchdown and Kayden Helaire, who had 57 yards and two touchdowns on three receptions.
Carencro, who improved to 5-4 on the season, have now won four consecutive games.
“Regardless of what happens next week, this team has cemented its legacy in the history of this football program,” Peters said. “They will always be recognized as a champion.”
