Phil Foden scored a sublime hat-trick as he produced a virtuoso display to help Manchester City return to winning ways in the Champions League group phase by easing past Greek side AEK Athens.

City needed to show a response after being beaten 4-2 at home by holders Paris St-Germain last week and they reacted in the perfect manner with a dominant performance.

Enzo Maresca's side had Foden in fine form for the victory, with the England international scoring three times and also providing an assist in a superb, all-round display.

Elliot Anderson reacted quickest to poke home and set City on their way after fellow summer signing Enzo Fernandez clipped a free-kick against the crossbar, while Allan also rattled the woodwork shortly after.

Foden, who scored his first goal since December at the weekend, found the net again to add City's second, collecting Rico Lewis' pass before unleashing a thumping finish into the roof of the net.

AEK Athens had failed to threaten in the opening period but hit back seven minutes after the restart as full-back Stavros Pilios drilled in a composed finish with his side's first shot on target.

But City restored controlled thereafter – Foden setting up Rayan Cherki to stroke home a trademark finish before the England midfielder struck a glorious first-time strike into the top corner and then completed his treble from close range 11 minutes later.

City will aim to continue to their flawless start in the Premier League on Saturday when they travel to Aston Villa for the 12:30 BST kick-off.

Here's how I rated the Manchester City players.

Gianluigi Donnarumma: Barely had anything to do apart from picking the ball out of the net for Athens' goal. 6

Rico Lewis: Had the freedom to get forward at will and provided the assists for two of Foden's goals. 7

Ruben Dias: The captain won more tackles than any team-mate but will be disappointed his side could not keep a clean sheet again. 6

Abdukodir Khusanov: Uzbek centre-back was unfussy and managed more interceptions than anyone else on the pitch. 6

Josko Gvardiol: Another that made marauding runs up field continuously in a tireless outing. 6

Elliot Anderson: All-action midfielder showed his poacher's instinct, reacting quickest to open the scoring from close range. 7

Enzo Fernandez: Curled a delightful free-kick against the crossbar from which Anderson scored. Almost bagged in the second period. 7

Allan: Showcased his pace from the left flank and unlucky not to score when he smashed a rising drive against the crossbar. 6

Rayan Cherki: Picked up pockets of space in the final third and produced some lovely touches before scoring in the second half. 8

Phil Foden: A magnificent display. Beginning to find his form in front of goal as he has now scored in back-to-back games, including a stunning second. Also set up Cherki's goal. 10

Floyd Samba: Another decent performance, the teenager, the teenager showed quick feet to win the free-kick which led to the first goal. 6

Subs:

Ryan McAidoo (on 62, Samba): Provided the pin point cross for the goal that sealed Foden's hat-trick. 6

Vitor Reis (on 72, Gvardiol): 6

Rayan Ait-Nouri (on 72, Fernandez): 6

Kaden Braithwaite (on 82, Dias): 6

Subs not used: Rulli, Bettinelli, Guehi, Ndiaye, Haaland, Doku, Bouaddi
