Yate Hockey Club celebrates three wins over busy weekend

The Ladies 1st XI showed tremendous resilience to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Old Bristolians W1.

After falling behind early in the contest, Yate responded in style through Antonia Joy, whose expertly converted penalty corner levelled the scores midway through the first half.

Yate then took control after the break when Jess Brain fired home from another penalty corner, putting the hosts ahead and rewarding a period of sustained pressure.

Although Old Bristolians struck back to ensure the points were shared, Yate can take plenty of positives from a disciplined performance and well-executed set-piece play.

The Ladies 2nd XI secured a superb 3-0 win over Lydney W2, continuing their strong start to the season.

Yate dominated possession throughout the match, with Lydney only entering the Yate D twice.

Excellent team build-up play from Katherine Park, Sarah Willis, Cerys J and Katie Lofthouse, among others, saw Yate repeatedly in the Lydney D.

However, despite the pressure, Yate struggled to find their first, until Kim Harris tapped in Ruth Belcher’s cross moments before half time.

The Lydney keeper kept the visitors in the game until Yate finally converted a penalty corner; Di Pugh-Hudson deflecting in LG’s powerful cross.

Imogen C then won Yate a penalty flick, which Pugh-Hudson converted to give Yate a well-deserved victory.

The standout result of the weekend came from the Men's 2nd XI, who travelled to Westbury & United Banks M4 and returned home with an impressive 4-2 victory.

An early breakthrough from a Yate youngster settled any nerves before Harry Collins took centre stage, scoring twice to put the visitors firmly in command.

The scoring was completed by Martin Ashley, who converted from a penalty corner to cap an excellent attacking display.

The result reflected a confident and energetic team performance, with Yate combining disciplined defensive work with ruthless finishing in the attacking circle.

The Ladies 4th Development XI were beaten 3-1 away at Old Bristolians W6, but the scoreline did not tell the whole story.

After trailing by three goals, Yate continued to compete strongly and were rewarded when Caroline Macdonald found the net in the second half after player of the match Alex Bessex’s beautiful cross.

The goal provided a deserved moment of encouragement for a young side continuing to gain valuable experience and develop throughout the season.

Overall, it was an encouraging afternoon for Yate, with two victories, a draw and a number of strong individual performances providing plenty for the club to build on heading into the next round of fixtures.

On Sunday, October 18, Yate Badgers beat South Gloucestershire 9-4.

Zac scored a hat-trick, with two each for Che and Louis, whilst Joe and Christian were also on the team sheet.

Yate under 10s were also in action, showing excellent team play and determination.
