The Kansas City Chiefs are heading into Week Six on the back of their early Bye Week and Patrick Mahomes is ready to pick up from where he left off.
Despite the questions surrounding Mahomes and the Chiefs on the back of a seriously underwhelming 2025 season, the Chiefs are unbeaten through the opening stages of the season. The Chiefs look back to their best as they prepare to face the winless Los Angeles Chargers.
Sunday will provide the Chiefs with a big opportunity to continue their winning form and it will offer the likes of Travis Kelce an opportunity to boost his stats against a struggling Chargers team. The veteran tight end has started the season well but has seen a dip in output over his last two games.
Kelce’s influence stretches way beyond his performances on the field, though, with Mahomes sharing a tradition that he still uses years on from it starting off with his tight end.
There have not been many better connections over recent years than Mahomes and Kelce. The tight end was a huge part of the Chiefs’ recent success that has seen numerous Super Bowls secured for Kansas City.
A lot goes into forming a connection that strong and Mahomes has revealed the private on-field conversations that have helped to develop the bond with Kelce and other Chiefs teammates.
“I think it started with Travis. I think that was kind of the biggest thing when I first got into the league and started starting. He always would just talk to me after every play, and then, when we got to games, I would know what he was thinking. Obviously, that’s kind of blossomed to what it’s blossomed to, so I try to keep that going,” said Mahomes on Wednesday.

“I’ve done it with Rashee now. I’ve done it with a lot of these guys that we’ve kind of been through here: we have these conversations so that, when we get in the game, we’re on the same page thinking. If we’re not, we talk about it on the sideline right after and try to be on the same page the next rep.”
Mahomes has certainly hit the ground running this season having thrown nine touchdowns through his opening four games of the season. The 31-year-old has only thrown two interceptions in those games, too.
Anything other than a comprehensive victory for the Chiefs on Sunday will be a disappointment for Andy Reid as they face a Chargers team that already look like their season is done.
