Dortmund entered the weekend needing all three points to guarantee their spot at the top of the table but Union Berlin (and Dortmund’s attack) had other ideas. It’s now two back-to-back games for Borussia Dortmund where they failed to score against weaker opposition. Despite featuring the first choice attack with Maxi Beier and Ethan Nwaneri behind Serhou Guirassy, the team managed only two shots on target across a 90 minute game with 63% possession. On the other side of the ball, however, Dortmund were airtight. Berlin were kept to 0 shots on target and five (poor) attempts inside the box. Ultimately it’s another disappointing result after Dortmund looked bright going into the international break. Next up is a long trip to Baku on Tuesday, and Dortmund need to right the ship.
Here are your nominations for Man of the Match in Dortmund’s 0-0 draw with Union Berlin. Hint - it’s all defenders!
Anton had another great game at the base of Dortmund’s defense. He led the team in touches (albeit that may be a product of Dortmund passing around the back too much) and dominated the defensive side of the game with 20 defensive contributions. He swept up the vast majority of Union Berlin’s attacks with ease. The highlight of the match, however, was his lung-busting run up the right side of the pitch after winning the ball. His pass to the penalty spot should have been a goal.
Union Berlin’s offensive strategy was simple; absorb pressure and counter-attack. Throughout the game, Union Berlin targeted Dortmund’s right side and were repeatedly beaten by Joane Gadou. The 19-year-old’s ability to read the play, recover, and win the ball is invaluable for this Dortmund team. There were several times where I thought Berlin had a fast break only for Gadou to appear and win the ball. It’s no surprise Berlin failed to muster a shot from Dortmund’s right side.
Gadou gave Ryerson the freedom to run up the field and he did just that. While his crossing could use some work, the wing-back led the team in chances created and was a danger on the right side.
Nico Schlotterbeck provided glimpses of his pre-injury self in this match. He was a defensive stalwart throughout a very physical match but also provided much-needed progression on the ball. He led the team in passes into the final third was an outlet for Dortmund’s defense.
