Packers reporter Rob Demovsky suggested that Green Bay could “maybe” explore a trade for Eagles running back Saquon Barkley if Philadelphia opts for a team-wide fire sale following Jalen Hurts’ season-ending injury.
On Monday, the Eagles sent shockwaves through the NFL by announcing that Hurts would be ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 campaign. Doctors discovered multiple blood clots in his lungs, and the star quarterback is set to undergo further treatment to address the health setback.
With Hurts sidelined for the foreseeable future, many fans and pundits have urged Philadelphia's top brass to wave the white flag on this season. The Eagles are winless in their last four contests and have already begun dismantling their roster by trading Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 7.
While making an appearance on Yahoo Sports Daily, Demovsky floated the Packers as a potential suitor for Barkley should the Eagles make him available. “I guess you can't rule it out,” the ESPN pundit said.
“It would not be something that I would think that they would probably do. But if they think they're a player away, then maybe they do it.”
Demovsky noted, however, that several factors would make a Packers-Barkley union unlikely.
For starters, running back Josh Jacobs is coming off the NFL Commissioner’s Exempt List on Monday, making him eligible to return for Green Bay’s Week 7 clash against the Detroit Lions.
Back in August, the NFL placed Jacobs on the temporary administrative list following his arrest back in May. The 28-year-old is entering his third season with the Packers, having signed a four-year, $48 million deal with the franchise during the 2024 offseason.
Since joining Green Bay, Jacobs has proven to be a dependable bellcow, having racked up 2,258 yards and 28 touchdowns on the ground, averaging 4.2 yards per carry.
“Look, if they're going to have Jacobs for the rest of the year, I think they'd feel pretty good about it and probably wouldn't have to make a move like that,” Demovsky said.
Barkley, meanwhile, has missed the Eagles’ last two contests against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers while dealing with a hamstring injury. Earlier this season, he also suffered a stinger that sidelined him for the first half of the Eagles' 24-20 victory over the Tennessee Titans in Week 2.
Yet given Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst’s recent moves, Demovsky stopped short of ruling anything out. “Now, that being said, this general manager, Brian Gutekunst, has sort of completely flipped the way he's done business here in the last couple of years,” he added.
“I mean, I would have never guessed that he would have given up two first-round picks for Micah Parsons. And sure enough, they did that.
“He's been the youngest team in the league for the previous three years. And this offseason, [they] went and added some veteran guys and some older veteran guys like Javon Hargrave, who's now out for the year, and Zaire Franklin, who's their new signal-caller on defense.
“Last year, they had like two guys over 30 years old. And I think one of them was the kicker. And now they've got some veterans in this room and have really solidified things."
