Jordan Henderson may be in for a rude return to Anfield as Chelsea take on Liverpool in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. The former Reds captain left the club in high standing three years ago but a recent act has burned bridges with certain supporters.

The 36-year-old donned the Liverpool armband during the most prosperous days of the Jurgen Klopp era. Henderson helped guide the club to Champions League honours, a Premier League title, an FA Cup, two Carabao Cups and more over the course of his 12-year tenure.

Yet some at his old stomping ground will have felt spurned by their former skipper. And it adds an extra element of spice to Wednesday's matchup if Henderson is part of Xabi Alonso's lineup.

Henderson, who joined on a free this summer after leaving Brentford, celebrated a brace against Bournemouth earlier this month by heartily slapping the Chelsea badge on his chest. The veteran midfielder scored twice in a 5-1 thumping of the Cherries, bagging the first and last goals of the game.

His second goal of the match was a particularly impressive free-kick curled into the top-right corner. However, his decision to display his Chelsea loyalties by smacking the club's crest didn't go down well with many of those in Liverpool.

"Jordan Henderson tapped on the Chelsea badge twice, yeah, he's a rat," read the response from one Liverpool fan account. A second added: "His behaviour tapping the badge like the club means the world to him is exactly why people don't like Jordan Henderson."

"I will never respect this Jordan Henderson guy," wrote another Liverpool fan. "Imagine tapping a Chelsea badge." Others referred to the ex-Reds favourite as "stupid" for his action, suggesting he "got carried away."

That wave of criticism lay in direct contrast to the reception he received from Chelsea's fanbase for his display of allegiance. And many Blues disciples couldn't get enough.

"Bro even tapped the badge," said one Blues supporter in response. "Proper Chels right there." Another commented: "Can see him becoming captain."

A third Chelsea fan even predicted a repeat of the gesture in front of the Kop, writing: "Scenes where Xabi Alonso's Chelsea defeats Liverpool at Anfield with Henderson scoring the winning goal and kissing the badge while knee-sliding in front of Liverpool fans."

If Henderson's reputation back at Anfield was already on shaky ground, such a decision may sever a lot of ties altogether. However, Liverpool will do their utmost to prevent such an outcome as they seek a fifth straight win this evening, whilst Chelsea aim to rebound after a 2-0 loss at home to Tottenham.
