Matthew, more latterly, has now been featured returning favour to the sporting world through his football kit sponsorship via his fish and chips brand “Yorkies”. ('Yorkie's Fish & Chips sponsors Skipton Juniors with new kit,' Craven Herald online).
Well played.
However, my most tangible memory of Matthew is his glorious triumph in the British and Irish Under-14 fell racing championship at Llanberis, North Wales.
A weekend to behold for the Skipton club, indeed quite a number in that illustrious era.
Meantime, also particularly shining at Llanberis was Stuart Hunn, who won silver in the Under-17 Boys event wherein he was only narrowly denied top spot by fellow England international team-mate, Johnny Mellon of Preston.
The Preston athlete himself was on the threshold of him producing a gutsy performance for Great Britain in the ensuing Olympic Games in Rio.
This group photograph was taken on the eve of the races in Llanberis, when the Skipton quartet—all on the back row—had just descended from walking and acquainting with the respective championship courses.
Featured left to right are Danny Walmsley, who himself produced a fine effort to achieve a top six place in the Under-17 event.
Also, Stuart Hunn, Roger Ingham—Skipton's trainer coach,—and Matthew Hurst.
The person at the front is a member of the England team management who wanted to be pictured with the starry Skipton quartet.
And, why not.
