Ross County left back Josh Reid hoping to catch manager Stuart Kettlewell’s eye in battle with Lewis Strapp for Staggies starting spot

Ross County left back Josh Reid says he is doing all he can to get noticed amid a battle with Lewis Strapp for a spot in the starting 11.

With Strapp having excelled since moving to Dingwall in the summer, academy graduate Reid has been limited to a single league start this season.

However, he has featured throughout County’s KDM Evolution Trophy campaign, even scoring his first senior goal for the club, and came on during Tuesday’s top of the table clash with Hamilton when Strapp was forced off with a dislocated shoulder.

Reid has done his best to impress in training and maximise his opportunities on the pitch, and he intends to keep showing the right attitude to earn his way into the starting line-up more often.

“Obviously I hope Lewis is alright with his shoulder, you don’t ever want to see someone get hurt and he has been really good this season,” Reid said.

“I came in on Tuesday and thought I did alright, so hopefully on Saturday if Strappy is out, I will get to play again.

“The KDM has been good for me and all the boys who haven’t been getting regular minutes in the league. It’s a really tight-knit group, we are all pushing in the same direction this year, so the vibes around the place are very good.

“The coaching staff have made it clear that it’s not acceptable to throw your toys out of the pram. It’s only October, so if you’re not playing now you like to think you will get a chance down the line, and everyone is pushing in the right direction.

“Even if you’re not playing, you just have to crack on. Everyone will play their part this season, so I just work as hard as I can in the hope that the manager notices I’m knocking at the door.”

For Staggies players and fans alike, this weekend’s trip to East Kilbride will represent a new challenge.

Ross County have never before travelled to the K-Park Training Academy, and while Reid is looking forward to ticking a new ground off his list he also knows the battle on the pitch will not be an easy one to win.

“I couldn’t tell you how many stadiums I’ve played in to be fair,” he added.

“I’ve ticked off all the Highland League grounds without actually playing in the Highland League, so I’m not sure how that’s possible, but I’ll be adding to the 42 on Saturday.

“I’ve heard the Astro is decent, so it’s another test and one we’re all looking forward to.

“They’re a good side, and they play some nice stuff. They play out from the back, and their goalkeeper is good with the ball at his feet. It doesn’t feel like too long ago since we played them, so we know what they will be like.

“I don’t think they have changed much from the start of the season, so I don’t think they have really altered their team much since we played them. It’s a good thing for them to keep that consistency, and we know what we’re going to face.

“We just have to do what we’ve been doing this season and make sure we play well. Ultimately, if we all turn up then hopefully that will lead to three points.”
