Xabi Alonso has provided an injury update ahead of Chelsea's clash against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fourth round. The Blues will be without a few big names when they face Andoni Iraola's side at Anfield on Wednesday night as they look to return to winning ways.
Speaking to reporters at Cobham training ground on Tuesday afternoon, Alonso began by confirming that Joao Pedro has suffered a thigh injury. The striker was left out of the matchday squad on Saturday evening, when Chelsea lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues manager said: "He has an injury of his thigh and is going to be out for a few weeks. Let's see how many. He's not ready for the next games.
"Of course, he's a key player. We'll miss him. We have to be ready to deal with the injury, starting tomorrow with Liverpool."
When asked whether he'll be able to manage without the striker, the Spaniard added: "Yeah, for sure. This is why you build a squad. For sure, some players are important, but this can happen."
Alonso then announced that Emmanuel Emegha will be available for selection.
