The Chicago Bears shook up the football world Thursday morning by trading for All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans. It's a blockbuster move that signals Chicago's belief not only in winning a single Lombardi Trophy, but also in stacking multiple Lombardi Trophies over the next few years. It should be no surprise that Chicago's championship odds went up so high after acquiring Simmons.
Perhaps the biggest reason the Bears swung for the fences with a superstar defender like Simmons is the presence of Caleb Williams. With Williams, the Bears clearly believe they already have one of the best quarterbacks in the sport who is more than capable of breaking their four-decade championship drought while also opening an extended Super Bowl window. Getting Simmons to fill in their defense now is an obvious play for giving Williams and the Bears' offense more complementary support to do just that.
And Williams knows it. The third-year quarterback took to his Instagram story on Thursday to share the Simmons news with his followers, along with his delighted two-word "Good morning, world," reaction with the face-with-peeking-eye emoji attached.
Yeah, that's a talented young man who knows the formidable Bears are playing for keeps now:
These are some exciting times for the Bears and their fans. They have a superstar quarterback in Williams who now has real support from his defense, led by Simmons, one of the best and most impactful defenders in the game. It should be exciting to see what Chicago can accomplish with these two players at the center of their Super Bowl-contending core for the foreseeable future.
