With influencer fighting continuing to grow in popularity, BKFC President Dave Feldman has opened up about the potential of that coming over to his promotion.
This past Saturday, BKFC returned to Newark, New Jersey, for BKFC 95 headlined by a bantamweight title clash between John Dodson and Jamel Herring.
The BKFC 95 main event left Dave Feldman ‘disgusted’, as he criticized both fighters for not trying to create a fight, stating that it’s not ‘Bare-Knuckle boxing, it’s Bare-Knuckle fighting’.
And that is a similar mindset that the BKFC President has in regards to influencers potentially fighting in the squared circle.
The MMA landscape is arguably in the best position its ever been in with there being several big options outside of the UFC.
Over the past few years especially, we have seen a massive influx of influencers wanting to show off their skills by fighting in combat sports. Misfits Boxing was created by internet personality, KSI, with the promotion consistently putting together fights between influencers. Not only that, but they now find themselves as a real competitor to the UFC, with Misfits having signed Michael Page after his UFC release.
And with the demand for influencer fighting seemingly going nowhere, the BKFC President has opened up about the potential of his promotion allowing influencer vs influencer fights. “If we had two influencers that were experienced in fighting, that would be something else. But if they’re not, this is not the sport for them. This is not boxing, where they can get away with getting hit and not getting really, really hurt,” Feldman told Bloody Elbow in an exclusive interview.
“This is just different. I think the influencers want to be a part of this, and their way of being a part of it is by coming to the fights, talking about it, and doing content at the events. We are going to do more and more with influencers and brand ambassadors. Like I said, if we had the right guys, it would be great to fight. We are gonna get the influencers really, really involved, but without fighting. They are still going to be able to represent the brand and themselves very, very well.”
When the promotion returned to Manchester this past September, there were a lot of influencers at the event taking in the action between Darren Till and Yoel Romero. And over the past few years, even Dana White has become more in tune with the idea that working with influencers is good for the promotion.
The closest thing BKFC have had to an influencer fighting in the ring is having Aaron Chalmers compete in the promotion. Chalmers is best known by Brits for starring in reality TV show, Geordie Shore. ‘The Joker’ has already fought three times in BKFC, but as Feldman referred to, he already had experience in fighting before fighting under their banner.
