Tre Tucker's Latest Emergence Has Raiders Excited for Potential

The Raiders' top wide receiver is starting to find a rhythm. It's getting the attention of one of the most important players on the team.

Amid a four-game losing streak, a player on the Las Vegas Raiders offense has begun to re-emerge into the spotlight.

Wide receiver Tre Tucker has been one of the most consistent elements of the Raiders roster over the past few seasons, including this year. The former Cincinnati standout is one of the fastest players on the field each Sunday. Las Vegas head coach Klint Kubiak has noticed that as his involvement in the offense has expanded.

After catching five passes for 103 yards and a touchdown, Tucker is seeing his role grow before his very eyes. The chemistry with starting quarterback Kirk Cousins has been a big reason for the sudden jump in production.

The Chemistry Grows

It's always important for your No. 1 wide receiver and quarterback to have good chemistry. While there have been bumps along the way, I believe Cousins and Tucker are starting to find the right balance, even if last week's game against the Los Angeles Rams didn't always produce consistent results (five catches on 12 targets).

As mentioned, Tucker's expanded role within Kubiak's explosive passing offense has allowed him and Cousins to build more connections. The veteran quarterback is encouraged by what he's seen.

"Tre’s done a great job. Even more importantly, the chemistry is good," Cousins said. "It’ll keep getting better. But I think just expanding his role and just allowing him to do more and more. As we’ve given him more, he keeps showing that he can do it. I’m encouraged by it and would love to see him keep doing more up ahead."

How Tucker's Role Has Expanded

Tucker has always been known for his speed, and the Raiders are showing he can wear multiple hats on offense, lining up out wide, in the slot, in motion across the formation, orbit motions, and shifts. In the fourth and final season of his rookie contract, Tucker is showing more than usual; you can call it a job interview for the Raiders brass and 31 other NFL teams. Cousins said as much on Wednesday:

"Well, I think we’ve just given him more to do, more routes, more ways to contribute, and I think he’s taken advantage of those opportunities," Cousins said. "I think he traits were always there. Sometimes when you’re really, really fast, it’s tempting to only have him do the fast things and have the slower guys do the slower things."

"There’s nothing wrong with having Tre do those things too and wear different hats. He’s shown he can do a lot. He doesn’t just need to be the fast guy.”

Is Tucker a True No. 1 Wideout?

To Cousins' point, Tucker certainly doesn't need to be the fast guy. It's been delightful to see his role expand in the Raiders' offense and the production that comes with it. However, it doesn't take away from the fact that Tucker is still more of a role player and No. 2 wide receiver in most offenses.

To Tucker's credit, he has been great for Las Vegas in recent weeks and past seasons, developing into a dependable pass-catcher. I still believe the Raiders need to add more upper-tier talent at wide receiver, or a high-ceiling pass-catcher with the potential to be one.

They could still pair one with Tucker, assuming he returns next season and beyond. For now, the production continues to prove critics, myself included, wrong while building more chemistry with Cousins.
