Watford Town Cricket Club mourn passing of club president

Chris had been the club's president since 2007, when she succeeded her late husband, Pete, in a role that recognised the pair's huge contributions to the club.

Throughout her association with the club, Chris played a vital role. Before her time as president, Chris was very active in an administrative role, which included the organisation of the club's successful and memorable tours to Devon and the Isle of Wight.

As president, Chris attended the majority of matches at Woodside, while continuing to support the club's events and playing a leading role in presentation events.

Chris and Pete's son, Mark Southam, naturally grew up around the club and played in both the first and second teams in the '80s and '90s.

In a statement, the club's chairman, Richard Bayliss, issued a statement to pay tribute to Chris following her tragic passing.

"Watford Town has lost one of the most universally-loved characters in local cricket," he wrote. "Club Presidents are often just a figurehead, but Chris made the role her own, ensuring she had direct involvement in almost every activity, contributing greatly to the development of a successful club.

"Chris was always there, supporting, encouraging and making everyone feel welcome. With the passing of Fred and Pete Southam, and now Chris, our club and Watford Borough has lost a direct link to the creation of Woodside Playing Fields as a marvellous sporting facility. She cared deeply about the park."

Former England cricketer Mark Ilott, who was born in Watford, has led tributes to Chris, sharing a touching tribute in a comment on Facebook.

"So sorry to hear the news," he wrote. "Chris, Pete, Mark and WTCC were a massive part of my childhood, and I only have fond memories of my time there.

"My condolences and thoughts go out to Mark and the family. X"
