Michael Carrick appears to be on the brink of being sacked by Manchester United in the wake of their heavy Champions League defeat at the hands of Como. The Red Devils were thrashed 4-1 by their Italian counterparts on Wednesday night, putting even more pressure on an already under-fire Carrick. He has only secured two wins in all competitions since taking charge of United on a permanent basis over the summer, and his tactics were called into question by Bruno Fernandes after the final whistle against Como.
Fernandes claimed that he and his team-mates had been instructed not to play man-for-man, something that was addressed by Carrick in his post-match press conference.
In a defiant response, he said: "We actually half pressed man to man in the second half and then conceded a goal from that.
"It's a little bit on whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play, but if you don’t run, you don’t run forward, you don’t run back, you aren’t going to win."
It leaves Carrick under enormous pressure to save his job, but it remains to be seen if the damage has already been done with INEOS having reportedly up a shortlist of potential replacements.

It's claimed that United's director of football has been given the authority to make that decision by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The report adds that Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell are being kept informed of potential successors.

Cesc Fabregas has revealed that he told his Como players to have mercy on Manchester United in the closing stages of the match.
He said: "I regret the last 10 minutes because I was the one who told the team to slow down the tempo because there's another match and at 4-0 we could manage things a little.
"I told the players to stop running and stay in the middle and that is something I regret because I'm the first to always push them to fight until the end.
"Their goal hurt me because we dropped our intensity and dropped our defensive block, but it was my fault.
"I'm very happy with how the players applied everything we tried to do, not only in terms of quality, which was high, but also the way we were pressing relentlessly until the 85th minute."

He replied: "Listen, I’ve not given my own position any thought.
"It is the supporters [I am thinking about]. I was one of them tonight watching that and I wasn’t happy at all."

He is currently a free agent, having stepped down from his previous role as Germany head coach after the World Cup.
Hurzeler is also seen as an option by United chiefs, but they are yet to express an interest in fellow reported candidate Antonio Conte.

Three potential replacements for Michael Carrick have already emerged, with former Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann among them.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler and ex-Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte have also reportedly been shortlisted.
It's claimed that Hurzeler's name has been repeatedly popping up in conversations behind closed doors.
A leaked meeting was revealed earlier this week, where a United executive gave further support to the idea of appointing him.
