Why Bayern Munich will beat Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have what it takes to see off English Premier League title-holders Arsenal in their UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday, even without the suspended Michael Olise.

Advantage Allianz Arena

In an uncertain world, you can be pretty sure of the outcome when Bayern contest a home Champions League match. The Bavarians have lost just one of their last 31 in the competition in front of their home crowd, beating Real Madrid 4-3 and drawing with eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in Munich deep into last season's knockout rounds.

A 5-0 thumping of Bodø/Glimt in their opening tie in Munich this season shows they have lost none of their swagger under the Allianz Arena lights.

In the league phase (or group stage), you have to go way back to December 2013 to find Bayern's last home defeat. As bona fide European powerhouses, the players and fans are accustomed to their side brushing continental allcomers aside, and Arsenal can be expected to feel that immense pressure.

Attacking riches

Any side in world football would miss the magical touch of Michael Olise, who is suspended for the encounter. On the other hand, if any attack in football is well enough stocked to compensate for that kind of absence, it is that of Vincent Kompany's charges.

Watch: Luis Díaz and Lennart Karl combine

Ismael Saibari was signed in the summer to offer another first-rate option into an attack that is bursting with the class of Luis Díaz, Lennart Karl and the irrepressible Harry Kane - even if Jamal Musiala remains an injury absentee.

The experienced Serge Gnabry has also returned to fitness in time for either him or Karl to deputise for Olise on the right flank.

Insane Kane

While Bayern were disappointed to come back from Norway with just a point following their 3-3 draw at Viking Stavanger, the goalscorer extraordinaire showed up yet again with a brace as he netted in his ninth consecutive Champions League tie.

By breaking a record previously held by Lionel Messi for the most goals over the age of 30 in the Champions League, and moving into joint-eighth on the list of all-time scorers in the competition, Kane has further underscored his status as a true icon.

The Arsenal tie carries particular significance for Kane, as it is against his former local rivals from his days at Tottenham Hotspur.

Watch: Stars back Kane for Ballon d'Or

He boasts an extremely impressive 15 goals in 22 appearances against the Gunners, and would relish the chance to build on that tally to further stake his huge claim for the Ballon d'Or award.

Familiar foes

Díaz boasts a similarly strong record to Kane's in his meetings with Arsenal from his time at Liverpool - two goals and three assists in seven appearances - while Gnabry made his initial breakthrough at the Gunners, spending four seasons there from the age of 16.

Watch: Gnabry the Great

Head coach Kompany also knows plenty about Arsenal, having faced them 18 times as a professional with Hamburg and Manchester City - scoring and captaining the English club to a win in the 2018 EFL Cup final.

That kind of familiarity from key Bayern figures can help instil an awareness of the strength of Mikel Arteta's side, and the level of performance Bayern would need to succeed.

Wednesday's clash is set to be a demanding one, but one Bayern can certainly rise to with their fans behind them.
