Barrow AFC boss: we won't be taking FA Cup clash lightly

The Bluebirds face the National League South side on Saturday (October 17) as they kick off their FA Cup campaign in the competition’s fourth qualifying round.

Barrow reached the second round of the cup last year and Murray said he was looking forward to getting started this time out.

He said: “We want to do well in it. We're approaching it as we do every other game. It's not one that we're taking lightly or we're going to make loads of rotations and give people game time.

“That's not the way I'm going about it. It's another game that we want to win. We want momentum.

“It's a cup competition we want to go as far as we can in. We know what we're coming up against.

“We've done our homework on Gloucester like we do every other team. We know we're in for a tricky game, so we're ready for the competition.”

Gloucester City currently sit 19th in the National League South but Murray doesn’t think that’s a fair reflection of his opponents.

He said: “I don't think their league position is relevant to the quality they've got on the team. I've managed a couple of their players, so I know how good they are quality-wise.

“They've got some very good technical players, and if we give them too much time and space, they'll hurt us.

“They have players that have played at a much higher level, players that will be equal in quality to the level we're at.

“So, we need to be on our mettle and, if we're not, we'll get found out.”

The Barrow boss said he won’t be resting anyone ahead of their National League clash with Forest Green next weekend.

Murray said: “It’s business as normal; that's not the mindset. It's not the mindset I've implanted into the group from the off.

“This week, we've had some honest chats about how we're going about it, because there's no easing up, there's no foot coming off the gas, there's no resting people or giving people game time.

“It's business as usual and we'll pick the team that we believe will win that game like we do every game.

“If that's the same team that beat Tamworth, so be it. But no, we're taking this seriously.

“I think we've installed a mentality in the group that the lads understand where the bar's been set in terms of the intensity and the standards.

“We're not good enough, and I've made this clear through the season, we're not good enough to turn up at 67% and think we can win a game of football.

“We're not that good, so we'll stay focused on what we're about. The players know what's expected, and as always, it's up to them to carry it out.

“I don't expect attitude or mentality to play a part in this.”

Barrow AFC face Gloucester City at the Furness Building Society Stadium at 3pm on October 17.
