The Los Angeles Rams were stunned by a controversial unnecessary roughness penalty in the final seconds of Sunday's 18-15 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
The Los Angeles Rams entered Sunday's Week 6 matchup as overwhelming 12.5-point favorites, desperately seeking a victory against the visiting Arizona Cardinals.
With under 40 seconds remaining and Los Angeles clinging to a 16-15 advantage, Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett found receiver Jalen Brooks for a 21-yard gain over the middle. Rams cornerback Josh Wallace made contact with Brooks as he fell to the turf in what initially appeared to be an innocuous play.
Earlier in the contest, Los Angeles had lost backup kicker Blake Grupe to a serious injury. It comes as Jim Nantz suffers 'injury' at hands of Tony Romo replacement live on CBS.
Nevertheless, the Rams defender was penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness. Several plays later, Arizona kicker Chad Ryland nailed his sixth field goal of the afternoon to secure an 18-15 victory for his squad as the clock hit zero. Numerous observers claimed "rigged" on social media.
"Rams lose thanks to a bogus 15-yard roughing penalty," posted former ESPN personality Skip Bayless. Multiple fans concurred. "The NFL is rigged, and the Rams continue to implode. Both can be true," one posted.
"Rough to lose games like this multiple times and have a rhythm. McVay does need to take some accountability for this. More bad football from the league and this team."
Rams head coach Sean McVay refused to make excuses during his postgame media availability, instead stating, "We won't win a game unless we figure out how to not beat ourselves."
Nevertheless, fans declared it rigged on X. " I'm no Rams fan, but that was the worst personal foul I've ever seen in my life In no world should that have been a 15 yard flag," another commented.
"This is such an unspeakably bad decision. The Rams have been the architects of most of their own problems this season, but they've also been mercilessly f----- by the officiating all year," a different fan wrote.
During Week 3, the Rams fell to the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football following two controversial late defensive penalties. Broncos receiver Pat Bryant subsequently admitted that he had deliberately attempted to draw a flag from the official.
The defeat leaves Los Angeles at 2-4, now trailing the San Francisco 49ers by 2.5 games in the division standings. Quarterback Matthew Stafford delivered a solid but unspectacular performance against the Cardinals, completing 25 of 33 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
His six-yard strike to tight end Colby Parkinson gave the Rams a one-point lead with less than a minute remaining. Meanwhile, star receiver Puka Nacua, who hauled in 17 passes the previous season, managed just six receptions for 80 yards on Sunday.
