Acadiana's struggles intensify after troubling road loss to Sam Houston

MOSS BLUFF – Acadiana suffered a 31-13 loss to Sam Houston Friday night, marking the first time the Broncos had defeated the Wreckin’ Rams in school history. After a disappointing 66-17 loss to Barbe the previous week, Acadiana had an opportunity to respond.

Instead, the Rams suffered another season setback. Here are five reasons Acadiana came up short:

1. Offense out of sync

Acadiana’s offense struggled to find its rhythm from the first snap of the game. When the Rams ran the veer, it had success, routinely picking up first downs and sustaining drives.

But when they got away from what was working, going to the air and exploring a more creative game plan, it was disastrous. The lack of scoring put tremendous pressure on the Acadiana defense and Sam Houston took full advantage of its stellar offensive game plan.

2. Defense had no answer

Sam Houston put 31 points on the scoreboard, but it felt like more. Acadiana’s defense could not stop quarterback Brody Anderson and running back Markeithon Simon, who seemed to always make the right read and find the right gap.

With the offense struggling to produce, the defense needed to step up, but the Broncos executed to near perfection all night and secured their first program win against the perennial powerhouse.

3. The Barbe loss may have carried over

The challenge ahead of Acadiana this week was putting that crushing loss to Barbe behind them and responding with renewed focus. Friday’s 31-13 loss at Sam Houston raised questions about whether the Wreckin’ Rams had adequately addressed the problems that surfaced a week earlier.

Dropping a game to Barbe wasn’t alarming. There were many who thought Barbe was a good team this season and had the ability to knock off Acadiana. One bad performance can happen to any team.

But consecutive losses of this nature put added pressure on players and coaches to identify what is going wrong and make the necessary adjustments before the season slips further off course.

4. Undisciplined penalties

Undisciplined mistakes extend an opponent’s drive and Sam Houston was the beneficiary of it often Friday. Personal fouls, holding calls and encroachment penalties continued to allow the Broncos to keep the ball, which clearly part of their game plan.

On the other side, multiple holding calls erased touchdowns for the Rams and penalties consistently halted offensive progress, putting the team in difficult situations. Acadiana could not afford to give away opportunities Friday against a Sam Houston team who had its number.

5. The program standard fading

Acadiana has built a reputation as one of Louisiana’s premier high school football programs. When teams see the gold helmet, it’s not just playing a team, it’s playing a tradition.

Friday’s loss was not simply another defeat: Sam Houston ended a 15-year stretch without a victory over the Wreckin’ Rams. Combined with the previous week’s loss to Barbe, the result raises legitimate questions about whether Acadiana is playing to the level its tradition demands.

The Rams have three more games on the schedule before the regular season ends. They'll close it out a few miles down Congress Street at Lafayette High, a long-standing rival that hasn’t beaten the Rams in 20 years.

Acadiana’s history and reputation won’t be enough to beat the Lions in 2026. The Wreckin’ Rams will have to prove they can meet that standard through their performance in the next two games leading up to that matchup..
