YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Beau Brungard threw two of his three touchdown passes in the second half, including the game-winner to Lynn Wyche-El, and Youngstown State rallied to beat North Dakota 31-28 on Saturday in a matchup of top 10 Championship Subdivision teams.
Andrew Lastovka kicked a 37-yard field goal then Brungard threw a 20-yard TD to Wyche-El on fourth-and-19 for the lead with two minutes to go to cap a drive extended by Mike Wells’ 26-yard run out of a punt formation.
Brungard threw for 268 yards and ran for 64 more. Lynn Wyche-El had 148 yards on six catches, scoring twice on passes from Brungard and the third on a hook-and-ladder after taking a lateral from Bryan Hunt.
North Dakota (6-4, 3-3 Missouri Valley Football Conference), ranked No. 8 in the Stats Perform poll, led 21-7 at halftime on a 9-yard TD pass to starting quarterback Jerry Kaminski from backup Javance Tupou'ata-Johnson.
Wells' interception set up Jaden Gilbert's short TD run early in the third quarter and Wyche-El scored late in the period on the trick play to get No. 4-ranked Youngstown (7-2, 5-1) within 28-21 entering the fourth.
Max Johnson's interception with 1:15 left sealed the Penguins' fourth straight win.
Kaminski threw for 195 yards with one TD but was intercepted twice. Matt Lawson ran for 99 yards on 17 carries for the Fighting Hawks.
North Dakota: Home against Illinois State next Saturday.
