A former Spalding firefighter came home with a clutch of medals after competing in a European games for the first time in ten years.
Terry Day spent 26 years as a fire officers at Spalding and retired in 2006 when he took up athletics.
He was also a pilot on Spalding Water Taxi and remains a branch delegate with The Royal Naval Association.
He has previously competed in the European and World Police and Fire Games and the World Firefighter Games until 2016.
But a knee injury, followed by a total replacement, kept him away from competing for a decade.
After much training, the 74-year-old travelled to Vigo in Spain to compete in this year’s European contest.
He discovered that everyone over the age of 65 competed in the same age group which made it ‘hard going,’ he said. But he took gold in the shot put and 100m and bronze in the discus and hammer.
Terry has already started training for the world contest next year which will be held in Perth, Australia when he will be 75 and in the 75 to 79 age group.
He is calling for the provision of an athletics track and associated facilities in Spalding as he found his own training hampered by a lack of track.
