Manchester City have been handed updates on a potential points deduction from their 114 financial charges case

Here is all you need to know about Manchester City's ongoing financial charges case against the Premier League...

  1. The findings: In late September, it was confirmed by the Premier League that an independent panel had found Manchester City guilty of 114 out of 115 charges having systematically violated financial fair play rules, disguised owner funding as independent sponsorship deals totalling hundreds of millions of pounds.
  2. Appeal process: Manchester City lodged a formal appeal against the guilty verdict. The club maintains its absolute innocence, stating it holds "irrefutable evidence" proving that all revenue streams and contracts were valid.
  3. The timeline: The appeal process is expected to drag on into early 2027 before a final, binding decision and subsequent penalties are formally applied.
  4. The stance of other Premier League clubs: M any of City's domestic rivals are not expecting the situation to be resolved this season, though, as per The Telegraph. It has therefore become unclear what many of them are actually playing for this season.
  5. How City could be sanctioned: If the guilty verdict is upheld, potential punishments range from massive points deductions (which could guarantee relegation to the EFL Championship) to historic fines, transfer bans, or multi-year penalties.
  6. A severe punishment: The latter outcome is certainly possible with the Daily Mail reporting that following an initial points deduction being imposed, another one next season could keep City in the Championship for at least two seasons.
  7. Ownership decision: Forcing City's owners to sell is another possibility if deemed unfit to run the club by the independent football regulator.
  8. Appeal hope: City’s legal team argues that the commission made "clear material errors of law, principle, and fact". They maintain that the Premier League relied almost exclusively on leaked, hacked emails from whistle-blower Rui Pinto without direct witness testimony.
  9. High Court option: If the three-person Premier League Appeal Board upholds the guilty verdict, City has the option under the Arbitration Act 1996 to challenge the procedural fairness of the ruling in the UK High Court.
