Staying fit has been a difficulty for Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro since returning to the club, with injuries disrupting his campaign.

The Spaniard sustained a hamstring injury against Aston Villa in September and spent a month on the sidelines. He did recently return to action off the bench against Chelsea, helping the North Londoners end their eight-year wait for a win at Stamford Bridge.

Before the start of the World Cup, Tottenham announced that Pedro Porro had put pen to paper on a new long-term deal until 2031. The defender had only two years remaining on his contract before signing fresh terms in June. That ended any speculation about his future, at least in the short term, regardless of how well he performed for Spain at the World Cup.

Pedro Porro grateful for Tottenham to hand him a new contract

Porro has certainly improved his game over the years and become a key player for Spurs. The Spanish international is now rated as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League, and it is no surprise he was handed a new contract in the summer.

Upon receiving a contract extension, Porro admitted that he was happy with the club’s gesture. The 27-year-old claims he feels “loved” at the club, although he insists he would have got a more lucrative package had he waited until after the World Cup.

“The club gave me the option to renew before the World Cup without knowing what was going to happen. It was a very nice gesture,” Porro said in an interview to Spanish outlet Cadena Ser‘s El Larguero.

“Afterwards, they gave me a great tribute; I feel very loved, and that’s very important to me. They’ve given me a good contract, although if I had waited until after the World Cup, I would have gotten more.”

Smart decision from Tottenham

Tottenham sensed interest was growing for Porro’s services in the summer and acted decisively by handing him a new contract until 2031. With that action, Spurs now firmly hold the cards over the right-back’s future.

Barcelona and Real Madrid monitored the Spaniard over the summer, and the duo have revived their interest in the hope of bringing him back to his homeland. Tottenham are expected to stand firm against any potential departure, even though Porro has expressed his desire to return to Spain at some point in his career.

The new contract has not stopped Barcelona and Real Madrid from expressing an interest in the Don Benito-born star, but the Lilywhites continue to maintain their stance that they would not part ways with Porro in 2027.
