Chad Ochocinco has seen enough from Bryce Young. The former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver said Monday that the Carolina Panthers quarterback should win the MVP this year. He said it one day after Young threw two touchdown passes in a 25-14 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Ochocinco also spread the credit around. He tied Young’s case to the playmakers around him on a Panthers team that now sits first in the NFC South at 3-2.
The prediction came at the end of a roll call of Carolina’s offense, when Ochocinco said, “I see you all boys getting involved in the offense. You are part of the reason why the Panthers are not just winning, but Bryce Young should win the MVP this year.”
The list Ochocinco ran through included running back Chuba Hubbard, who got a double “I see you,” and receivers Jalen Coker, Tetairoa McMillan, John Metchie III and David Moore. Tight end Tommy Tremble got his own nod for “making your presence felt out there.”
Ochocinco’s praise for Young went beyond one Sunday. “Bryce Young putting on a stellar performance, putting on a mean demonstration, week in and week out.”
Several of the names on Ochocinco’s list showed up in Sunday’s win in Philadelphia. Young completed 20 of 39 passes for 281 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Both scores went to Tremble.
The first, a 12-yarder in the second quarter, put Carolina up 10-0. Philadelphia pulled within 19-14 early in the fourth quarter.
Then, with 6:33 left, Young found Tremble from 19 yards out to make it 25-14. Tremble finished with four catches for 46 yards.
Coker led Carolina with 97 receiving yards on six catches. His biggest catch was a 32-yarder on third-and-8 from the Panthers’ 10 late in the third quarter, which kept alive a 14-play, 92-yard drive.
Hubbard kept that drive going with a 19-yard run on fourth-and-1 and finished it with a 1-yard touchdown run. He ran for 120 yards on 28 carries. McMillan added six catches for 86 yards, and Moore had a 27-yard catch.
The Eagles were shorthanded. Jalen Hurts is on injured reserve and will miss at least four games with a blood clot in his calf.
Saquon Barkley sat out a second straight game with a hamstring injury. Backup Tanner McKee went 26 of 45 for 215 yards and a touchdown. Carolina outgained Philadelphia 399-222 as the Eagles fell to 2-4.
The MVP talk didn’t start with Ochocinco. AP reported that a small group of Panthers fans who made the trip chanted MVP at Young late in the game. Young said afterward that the team feeds off that support wherever it plays.
Young’s season line gives Ochocinco something to point to. Through Week 6, his 1,549 passing yards rank sixth in the NFL, and his 11 touchdown passes are tied for seventh.
He has thrown just two interceptions. Pro Football Network’s NFL QB Impact Grade has him at 78.6 for the season, 13th of 34 graded quarterbacks.
He has also been steady. Young has thrown for at least 281 yards in all five of Carolina’s games, with a high of 361 yards in a Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears.
One number lags behind the rest. Young’s 60.2% completion rate ranks 27th of 33 qualified quarterbacks over the same stretch, and his 20-of-39 afternoon Sunday pulled it down.
Young’s next chance to add to his case comes Sunday, Oct. 25, when the Panthers host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Bank of America Stadium. Four days later, on Thursday, Oct. 29, they play the Green Bay Packers in Green Bay.
