Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have clawed their way to the periphery of the Super Bowl conversation after a 5-1 start to the season. Despite being largely written off during preseason after missing the playoffs for the first time in the Mahomes era, the Chiefs have looked like possible contenders to continue their dynastic run.

This week, Mahomes’ longtime personal quarterbacks coach Jeff Christensen revealed that the Chiefs quarterback still has lofty ambitions for his career before even considering retirement.

Patrick Mahomes’ QB Coach Details Lofty Career Ambition

During this week’s segment of the “Fearless” podcast with Jason Whitlock, Christensen recounted an enlightening conversation about Mahomes’ ambition as a rookie.

“It’s always risky for me to say it, but when I was with Patrick several years ago, when we first started working, I said, ‘What’s your get-out number? When you’ve made X amount of money or whatever? You’re gonna shut it down and say, ‘Okay, that was a good career.’ A bunch of guys say they don’t have it, but they do and they change when they get a bunch of big money. They change their work ethic and so on,” Christensen narrated.

He continued, “And Patrick said, ‘My get out, is when I win my tenth Super Bowl.’ I said, ‘You’re serious?’ He goes, ‘Yeah.’ And this was when he was a rookie and not playing. And I had that conversation with him July 2017, and I said, ‘You have the skills to be the greatest quarterback ever. Go on, son. You just have it.’ And Pat, through the stuff, his actions have matched his words vehemently. He does not care about the money; he wants to be the greatest, and his action plan is exactly on schedule.”

The Chiefs selected Mahomes No. 10 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he was Alex Smith’s backup during his rookie season, only getting his first start in a Week 17 clash against the Denver Broncos.

After succeeding Smith as the Chiefs’ starter, Mahomes has helped establish Kansas City as a dynasty, winning three Super Bowl titles and the MVP award in each.

In addition, Mahomes has won the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award, earned six Pro Bowl nods and two First-team All-Pro selections, positioning himself in the greatest-ever player conversation despite lagging behind the legendary Tom Brady’s seven Super Bowl titles.

The Chiefs have restructured Mahomes’ contract for the fourth consecutive season. In June, Kansas City added two years to his deal, bringing its reported total value to $504.75 million, with that compensation scheduled to become guaranteed through contract mechanisms. Mahomes can earn up to $522.25 million through incentives and escalators.

Mahomes will earn an average of $64 million annually from 2027, which is an NFL record.

The two-time NFL MVP and the Chiefs turned $54.45 million of his 2026 salary into a signing bonus, which helped the team reduce his cap hit for the year to $34.65 million and free up $43.56 million in cap space.

Mahomes has seemingly recovered from a torn ACL and LCL and has amassed 1,474 passing yards on 64.9% completion, 9 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, adding 71 rushing yards and 1 score for the Chiefs this season, earning a PFN’s NFL QB Impact grade of 79.6 (No. 11 in the NFL).
