England out of Women's RL World Cup as Samoa reach semi-finals

England never lacked effort, but quality was lacking at key moments - particularly when chasing tries in the second half.

After two blow-out games, it was nice to see a competitive match. But one in which England were ultimately outclassed.

Meet the second half, same as the first half.

A rebound off an England player means six again for the Samoans, and they build a huge overload out to the left for Mercedez Taulelei-Siala - who has been excellent in defence - to score out by the sidelines.

Pauline Piliae-Rasabale's kick is short, she's nil for four from the tee. But Samoa are in total control.

The players are on the field in Wollongong, and the anthems have been sung.

It is a magnificent stadium, with one side of the ground an open grass bank with the sea right behind it. It's a beautiful view, but you could see from the national flags that the wind coming in from the beach is very strong.

What impact that has on the game remains to be seen.

England are having to defend hard in this first half, says Paul Eastwood, the British High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, who is watching all three matches in Wollongong today. He has already seen the wheelchair team begin their World Cup defence with a 98-18 victory over Wales, and later on, he will be taking in the men's crucial Group B-C game against PNG. That's a 09:05 GMT kick-off.

England head coach Stuart Barrow, speaking to the media on Tuesday about Eva Hunter's injury: "Eve had a scan on Monday night, we are waiting on the results, but she is definitely out on Friday.

"She's still in her moon boot, but she is surrounded by good people and is relaxed."

On Jodie Cunningham, who suffered a nasty ear injury against Australia: "Jodie's ear is reattached. It was not pretty; you would not want your tea straight after seeing it.

"But she taped it up, got on with it [the match against Australia], then straight after the game they went straight to hospital, where they did a great job."
