Gaffer For A Day: Half of the fans wanted John Mousinho out a week ago - now look at Portsmouth

Gaffer For A Day Danny Thompson, aged 45 from Gosport, analysis Pompey’s 1-0 victory at Norwich...

You’re a big fan of Madiodio Dia, aren’t you?

It’s a weird one, he’s either good or poor, there’s no in between. The last couple of games should have given him the confidence he needs, especially Saturday, when he was our man of the match.

Dia did everything simple, won all his aerial battles, when he had the ball at his feet he gave it nicely, didn’t try anything spectacular on the edge of the 18-yard box, and defended well. A proper old-school performance.

Their centre-forward didn’t have anything, Dia had him in his pocket all game. If he does it simple and doesn’t attempt Cruyff turns on the edge of the box, he’s okay, but you know he’s got a mistake in him at some point.

Having said that, the fans obviously gave him a lot of confidence, getting right behind him, and he and Regan Poole were colossal at the back.

And what about Iyad Mohamed?

I can’t believe John Mousinho took him off after 60 minutes, I thought it would be Pack, who was holding his hamstring and every time he got the ball was sluggish with it.

When Mohamed went off instead, we seemed to lose all our composure, we lost a bit of shape in midfield and the legs went a bit. Ebou Adams is brilliant, but he gets carried away and all of a sudden empties out a midfield, so Pack is isolated.

Mohmed has more tactical nous around him, but I suppose if he was shattered then he had to come off at that stage.

I thought Ebou might start at Norwich, purely because he got the winner against Sheffield United, but Mohamed looked very composed, broke up play in the middle of the park and his distribution was good.

Did Pompey deserve the win?

We probably did. It wasn’t pleasing on the eye, it could have ended up fizzling out 0-0, but it was a proper away-day performance from us.

Going away from home, you are never going to play well every time and sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up and grind out a result - and that’s what Pompey did on Saturday.

They stuck together and it was a bit backs against the ball late on, but we defended brilliantly and everyone put in a shift. Although it was probably the worst Norwich team I have ever seen, they didn’t offer anything moving forward.

What a turnaround this week

After the Southampton game, everyone was doom and gloom, half of the fans wanted Mousinho out and all the talk was Wednesday night is a must-win game - so what a difference six days makes.

I watched Wolves the other night and they weren’t brilliant. I know they still got the win against Burnley, but maybe we can get a point there, then we have Millwall at home.

Our players should take a lot of confidence from the last two games. After Southampton, everyone was down in the dumps, but in the space of six days we’ve turned it around with two massive wins.
