Celtic Sent Exciting Jota Reminder

Jorge Cadete says he is still struck by the affection Celtic supporters show him, despite spending only one season at the club.

Cadete remains one of those players whose time at Celtic was short but memorable.

All the upcoming Celtic fixtures are on our fixtures page.

His goals, personality and connection with the support made sure he was not forgotten in Glasgow.

Speaking to Bola Branca ahead of the clash, Cadete said: “It’s always gratifying to know that Celtic fans haven’t forgotten me.

“They contact me almost every other day. I was only there for 12 months, not seven or eight years, which surprises a lot of people.

“They are Scottish, but the British… their culture is to play to win. They don’t play with strategy, they don’t play to draw. They play to score and win. And that’s what Celtic will do.”

Cadete clearly expects Celtic to go to Lisbon with attacking intent, even if Benfica will be favourites on home soil.

Martin O’Neill’s side are looking for a response in Europe after losing their opening Europa League league phase match against Ferencvaros.

Benfica away is not the type of fixture where Celtic can afford to be careless, but Cadete’s point is about mentality.

Celtic will need to defend properly, but they cannot spend the night sitting deep and hoping to survive.

They will need runners close to the striker, better use of the ball when they break, and enough belief to make Benfica defend facing their own goal.

Cadete also spoke about Jota, who will miss the game because he is not part of Celtic’s Europa League squad.

Cadete said: “He had already proven his quality before leaving for Saudi Arabia and he’s going to really shake things up for the team.

“A player with more time at the club always has more opportunities to ensure the fans don’t forget him.”

Asked whether Jota is already one of those players remembered fondly by the Celtic support, Cadete added: “Of course, without a doubt, he already is.”

That will not surprise anyone who watched Jota at his best in green and white.

Celtic could have used him in Lisbon, but his return still gives O’Neill another option domestically at a time when the attack needs more quality and a sharper final pass.
