'Closest Thing to Kobe (Bryant) That I've Seen,' 'An All-Time Great' — Lakers Star Luka Dončić Draws Bold Comparison From NBA Champion

Amid Luka Dončić’s scorching start to the season, ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins compared the Los Angeles Lakers superstar’s mindset to Kobe Bryant’s, drawing on his own experience facing the late Lakers legend in the NBA Finals.

Dončić entered Wednesday’s road matchup against the Sacramento Kings riding a five-game streak of 35-plus points, tied for the longest by a Laker since Bryant. He promptly extended the run to six games with another 40-point performance.

Kendrick Perkins Sees Kobe Bryant in Luka Dončić

Perkins and Iman Shumpert discussed Dončić’s playing style on Wednesday’s edition of “NBA Today,” with the former spotlighting the six-time All-Star’s Mamba-esque mentality.

“Man, listen, we’re watching an all-time great, top 10 greatest offensive player that I’ve ever seen, and I’ve played against some all-time greats, and one of them was Kobe Bryant,” Perkins said.

“Luka is the closest thing to Kobe that I’ve seen mentality-wise ’cause he don’t give a [expletive].”

Perkins then recounted similarities in how his Boston Celtics game-planned for Bryant, a five-time champion, in the 2008 and 2010 Finals.

“When it comes to the scouting report, facing a guy like Kobe Bryant in the Finals twice, our scouting report says, you know what, we’re gonna let Kobe get his, and we gonna shut down everybody else. It’s gotten to that point when you’re guarding Luka Dončić,” the NBA champion added.

Dončić’s scoring streak began with a season-high 52-point eruption against the Utah Jazz on Oct. 25, kickstarting a monster run. Wednesday’s 40-point night against the Kings marked the two-time scoring champion’s fifth time reaching the 40-point mark in the last six contests as LA improved to 7-2.

The Slovenian megastar is now averaging a career-high and league-leading 38.5 points per game on elite 49.5/43.1/89.3 shooting splits through eight appearances, along with 8.1 rebounds, 8.0 assists, and 1.8 steals a night.

While opponents have utilized double teams and triple teams against Dončić far from the basket, his tough shot-making ability and knack for finding the open man have left defenses helpless.

Lakers wing Quentin Grimes dubbed the 27-year-old’s offensive mastery “surreal,” noting that “it seems like everything he shoots is going to go in.”

Meanwhile, LA coach JJ Redick described him as a “supernova,” explaining that “when he has it going, it’s pick your poison, because he can just make any shot. And then you start putting two on the ball, and everybody else is the beneficiary of that.”

Dončić is carrying the massive scoring load on a revamped roster built to complement his skill set following LeBron James’ offseason departure to the Philadelphia 76ers. If he can sustain his eye-popping scoring totals, he could finally capture his elusive first MVP.
