Dundee United midfielder Zidane Iqbal has been tipped as a possible Celtic signing after his performance against the Hoops.

The former Manchester United playmaker operated at the base of the midfield alongside Dylan Tait and impressed with his showing in the 2-2 draw.

Some in the Celtic support have been critical of the lack of pressure Iqbal was under at times, but like all good midfielders, he was still able to find it in a number of occasions when his team were under pressure.

Aged 23 and born in Manchester, Iqbal appeared for Iraq at this summer’s World Cup and moved to Tannadice from FC Twente ahead of this season. His performance at Parkhead was his best yet.

Celtic fans on Zidane Iqbal: ‘Ask the question in January’

Iqbal’s showing firstly impressed ex-Celtic and United midfielder Scott Allan, who said on Sportscene: “Composure is the word for it. I thought Zidane Iqbal was at the heart of that. Having footballers in there who are all on the same wavelength… when you’re playing at Celtic Park, you have to have guys who can stay on the ball.

“He was just so fluid in the midfield. I thought Celtic actually found it really hard. Jim Goodwin has obviously went with a game plan, and [he’s] carried that out.”

Host Steven Thompson added: “I really like the look of Iqbal, he’s so composed on the ball. The midfield three are very important to the success that Jim’s had over this last wee period with the team.”

Some Hoops fans on X, where clips of Iqbal’s performance went viral, juxtaposed his midfield performance with Celtic’s. @k_h__1888 bemoaned how he ‘ran through Callum McGregor like he wasn’t there’.

@ewan_mckeegan wrote: “Hate to admit it, but that Zidane Iqbal ran us ragged last night. He is some player for Dundee United,” whilst @Thxmas9 wrote: “Brilliant to watch. Someone, if we were in the market for a wee deal, I’d take rapid.”

He also wowed @MontfordBebb, who wrote: “A number 6/8 with pace, physicality and a football brain. Celtic should be asking the question in January.”

Fans of Iraq and United were also among those raving about him, labelling his performance ‘delicious’ and ‘special’.
