Manchester United have seen another former defender secure a fresh opportunity in English football, despite the summer transfer window closing nearly two months ago.

Although clubs can no longer complete ordinary transfers until January, free agents can still sign contracts outside the window, subject to registration rules.

For several former United players, finding the right club has become far more complicated than anyone could have imagined during their Old Trafford careers.

Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba once represented enormous excitement and ambition at United, each arriving with the expectation of becoming a defining figure.

Sancho was supposed to transform the attack, Martial once appeared destined for greatness, while Pogba returned as one of world football’s most recognisable midfielders.

Yet their stories became reminders of how quickly football can change.

Injuries, inconsistent performances and difficult departures gradually replaced the optimism that once surrounded them.

Another former United prospect has experienced a similarly difficult journey, having once looked capable of establishing himself at Old Trafford before his career stalled.

Now, after months of uncertainty, the defender has finally secured his next opportunity.

Rotherham United officially announce newest signing

Rotherham United have officially confirmed the signing of Brandon Williams on a short-term contract until January 23, 2027.

The 26-year-old joins as a free agent after impressing head coach Alex Bruce and the coaching staff during an extended trial at the club’s Roundwood training base.

Williams had been training with Rotherham since July, working to regain his fitness following a difficult spell away from regular football.

The Manchester-born full-back made 51 senior appearances for United after being promoted by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019.

He scored his first senior goal against Sheffield United that November, becoming a popular figure for his aggression, energy and commitment.

However, loan spells at Norwich City and Ipswich Town failed to secure his long-term future at Old Trafford.

Williams departed United in 2024 before joining Hull City in 2025, making just one appearance before leaving by mutual consent in February.

His arrival continues Rotherham’s growing connection with United.

The Millers previously signed former academy defender Sonny Aljofree following his release, while midfielder Jayce Fitzgerald joined on loan during the summer.

Williams will wear the number 33 shirt, with the opportunity to rebuild a career that once promised so much.
