The 6-1 Minnesota Vikings were one Rapoport drafted tweet away from trading wide receiver Jauan Jennings back to the San Francisco 49ers last week. On Wednesday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed it.
On Sunday, Jay Glazer (FOX Sports) reported that the Vikings and 49ers had worked out trade terms, contingent on Jennings getting on a call with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch. Jennings, per Glazer, told them he wanted to stay in Minnesota, and the deal was vetoed.
Here’s Jay Glazer talking about Jauan Jennings not wanting to get on a FaceTime call with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch to get traded back to the 49ers
Jennings signed with Minnesota in May after six seasons with the 49ers, who drafted him in the seventh round in 2020. Through six games with the Vikings, he has six catches on 10 targets for 54 yards and no touchdowns.
Not everyone was sold on that version. Ian Rapoport said Tuesday he hadn’t “definitively heard” that Jennings scuttled it.
But on Wednesday, Shanahan confirmed Glazer’s report. The two teams were close enough on terms that Jennings was allowed to talk to his former head coach. And after the two got on a facetime call together, Jennings ultimately decided he wanted to stay in Minnesota.
“The report was accurate, just not totally exactly detailed. I mean, you can’t talk to players on other teams, you’re not allowed to. We love Jauan. We have such a good relationship with Jauan and know him real well. And we didn’t want to, we don’t want to do it without talking to him first. So we had to agree on some things to at least make it close enough to be able to talk to him. And then when we got on a FaceTime with JJ, it went well, it was awesome. We talked about a lot of stuff and he ended up saying that he was happy with where he was… But he was like, man, Kyle, I’m pretty happy here and liking stuff. And when I heard the way he talked and where we’re at, I agreed with him.”
Shanahan also shut down any idea of bad blood, saying Jennings had just gotten back to Tennessee with his family and “he’s with good people. He likes where he’s at.”
The trade deadline is Nov. 10, the day after Minnesota hosts the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. Shanahan said the 49ers are “still looking into” receivers, just like it is “every other position.”
In five seasons on the field for San Francisco (2021-25), Jennings caught 210 passes for 2,581 yards and 22 touchdowns in 75 games. His best year came in 2024, when he posted 77 catches for 975 yards and six touchdowns.
He followed that with 55 catches, 643 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns in 2025. He’d need a miracle finish in Minnesota to touch those numbers.
