Phil Foden reminded everyone what he is capable of this week with a stunning hat-trick as Man City cruised past AEK Athens. But who is better – Foden, Cole Palmer, or Morgan Rogers?
Foden has endured a difficult few years. At City, Foden has been out of the side, injured, lacking rhythm, but still popping up with moments of magic. He did exactly that, scoring three brilliant goals on Tuesday.
Whenever Foden scores, or does something magical – which he has shown time and time again that he can do – there is often debate. Especially given the plethora of attacking midfield talent England boasts.
With Thomas Tuchel due to announce his England squad for the November break and fixtures against Croatia and Spain, all three will be in the mix. Rogers will almost certainly be a definite pick to play.
Palmer is fit again, and while he pulled out of the squad last month, he is likely to be given another chance to play for the Three Lions. Foden was omitted from the squad during the last international break.
On TalkSPORT, former Chelsea player Jason Cundy was asked by Jamie O’Hara to rank the trio. He said that Foden needs to do it regularly, against better teams: “It’s about what you do in the Premier League.
“What you do against stiffer opposition, or in the latter stages of the Champions League.” O’Hara then asked: “So who’s your one, two, three?” Cundy replied, instinctively: “Rogers, Palmer, Foden.”
Of course, Foden’s trophy cabinet is far bigger than the Chelsea duo’s. Now 26, Foden has won the Premier League six times, and the Champions League, among plenty of other trophies and accolades.
He is closing in on 400 appearances for City, having a hand in 185 goals and assists in 377 games. But right now, Rogers is the one in the England squad, and Palmer was selected ahead of Foden by Tuchel.

It is almost impossible to tell a difference between the trio. Rogers’ stats are slightly distorted because he played for Aston Villa instead of Man City, while Palmer was injured for much of the 2025-26 season.
At their best, all three are excellent, and there is little between them. What is clear is that England have an abundance of talent. Foden might have scored a hat-trick, but Palmer and Rogers are on absolute fire.
