Liverpool Cool Interest In £50m Winger: Should They Wait Until Summer?

Liverpool Transfer News: Liverpool have reshaped their attack ahead of the 2026/27 season, but Mohamed Salah’s departure has left Andoni Iraola balancing immediate results with long-term recruitment. Federico Chiesa offers experience, while Víctor Muñoz brings versatility after arriving for a reported £34.5 million. Jeremie Frimpong can push forward from right-back, giving Iraola another option on the right.

However, Liverpool still lack a specialist winger who consistently stretches defences, attacks full-backs one-on-one and creates space through direct running. That profile makes Valencia teenager David Otorbi an interesting long-term target, although the club’s current options mean Liverpool don’t need to force a January deal.

The 19-year-old’s acceleration and directness make him an exciting prospect for Liverpool, but his current numbers show how much development he still needs. Otorbi has made nine La Liga appearances this season, starting three and playing 350 minutes.

He has scored once and registered no assists, completing seven dribbles and creating four chances with 89% passing accuracy. His five tackles across those minutes raise further questions about his current contribution to Iraola’s demanding counter-press.

According to Tribuna Deportiva, Liverpool informed Valencia of their intention to trigger Otorbi’s reported £25 million release clause. The report says Valencia could extend his contract until 2031 and raise the clause to £50 million. However, sources disagree over whether the club has completed that move.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that Liverpool won’t pay £50 million for the winger and would drop their January pursuit if Valencia raises the price. Liverpool reporter David Lynch expects the club to avoid a rushed decision. No reliable weekly salary figure has emerged.

Liverpool transfer news: Should Liverpool abandon the deal or wait until summer?

Liverpool shouldn’t abandon their interest, but they should reject a £50 million January gamble. Otorbi’s potential is clear, yet his limited senior output doesn’t justify that fee for a player who may initially serve as squad depth. With Chiesa, Muñoz and Frimpong already available, Iraola can assess his right-wing options without rushing into another expensive signing.

A summer approach would give Liverpool more time to assess Otorbi’s production and defensive work, while Valencia would have to decide whether to negotiate below the reported clause. Under FSG’s valuation-led recruitment model, Liverpool should keep monitoring the teenager, establish his willingness to move and negotiate on their terms rather than pay a premium for potential.
